Job Summary

Senior technical expert who will serve as a primary technical and data architect for the UC Davis Health Databricks Platform to ensure the data architecture, solution delivery and operations is scalable, governed and optimized to support the organization's growing data, analytics and AI workloads.

The individual will bring a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in the areas of enterprise data warehouse architecture and analytics (e.g., Databricks, SQL Server), data modeling and management, data analysis, data pipeline and ELT/ETL development at the Health System. This includes, but is not limited to, the design, development and support of complex mission-critical cloud data warehouses, data lakes, data lakehouses and supporting application software.

Incumbent will have a leadership role as a Senior Data Architect working on highly technical, complex application projects such as the Data warehouses on Databricks, Clinical and non-Clinical data marts, Advanced Cloud computing, AI/Machine Learning models and applications. Will design and implement end to end data architecture, data models to support analytics. Will design and implement security and access models along with shaping data access policies and process. Design and implement data engineering pipelines, including ingestion from Epic (Clarity/Caboodle/FHIR), HL7, other clinical and operational systems. Shape cost optimization and FinOp practices for the data components with proactive monitoring and alerting. Evaluate and implement new platform capabilities on Databricks aligned to organizational priorities. Partner with data consumers such as analytics, applications, research, data science teams to design and implement patterns for governed applications, AI and agent workflows and self-service analytics.

May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources, functions with a high degree of autonomy.

Applies advanced IT and data architecture concepts and campus/medical center/OP or community-specific objectives to resolve highly complex issues with significant impact on the organization. Regularly works on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Effectively selects criteria for evaluating results. Responsibilities include serving as technical expertise resource to the team, management, affiliates, and leadership.

Participate in planning, developing, training, implementation, and evaluation of information systems to support ongoing operations and ensure development, evaluation, and ongoing support for all components of the program.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 10+ years of experience as a Data Architect driving end to end data architecture and delivery for data warehouses, data lakes, analytics systems.
  • 5+ years of experience designing and operating cloud data platforms (AWS preferred)
  • Advanced knowledge of data warehouse architecture and analytics, data management, data analysis, data pipeline development, and business intelligent (BI).
  • Deep hands-on expertise with Databricks (Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, Spark, SQL Warehouse, ML Flow)
  • Experience in data modeling practices for data warehouses and analytics
  • Experience in data engineering and ETL/ELT delivery processes with SQL, Python and other frameworks
  • Good understanding of data governance, security, and compliance in regulated environments (such as HIPAA)
  • Experience with FinOps practices, including cost attribution, chargeback models, and consumption forecasting * Ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical architectures
  • Excellent communication skills, able to work across technical teams, leadership, and external partners
  • Knowledge of advanced cloud computing, artificial intelligence development, and machine learning data models.
  • Knowledge of software, database, infrastructure, or other IT function. Knowledge relating to the design and development of data processes and software across the organization.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to understand business needs and how business systems can support those needs.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates problem solving skills and able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Academic institution or large integrated health system experience preferred.
  • Experience leading projects with contractors and/or consultants
  • Knowledge and understanding of University policies and procedures.
  • Databricks certification (Data Engineer Associate/Professional or Platform Architect)
  • Exposure to infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation)
  • Academic medical center or large integrated health system IT experience
  • Experience leading projects with contractors/consultants preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric/Power BI and Tableau integration patterns
  • Experience with healthcare data systems (Epic, FHIR, HL7, Clarity/Caboodle)
