Primary Purpose of Position
An employee in this position shall have the responsibility for the maintenance and repair of building HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. Employee will also repair and maintain, construct furniture, floor coverings, doors, windows and other tasks associated with the carpentry trade.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Trainee/Apprenticeship: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. After successful completion of a one year apprenticeship in the assigned trade(s), the position can be updated to the Contributing Level.

Essential Job Functions

  • Considerable knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the electrical trade.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade.
  • Ability to locate and correct defects in the electrical systems and equipment.
  • Ability to read blueprints and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Repair and maintenance of electrical systems to include the repair or replacement of light fixtures, switches, light ballasts, starters, electrical wiring, and other fixtures and devices.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on electrical systems in classrooms and academic buildings. Repair and maintenance of building plumbing systems and carpentry fixtures.
  • Assist with repairs to plumbing fixtures, piping, hot water heaters, valves, pumps, motors, and other equipment and fixtures associated with carpentry and plumbing systems.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Knowledge of methods for installing and repairing electrical systems.
  • Skill in the use of tools, meters, materials, and equipment commonly used in the performance of electrical work.
  • Cut, thread, bend, and assemble conduit.
  • Troubleshoot and repair or replace light fixtures, switchgear, motor control centers, emergency lights, exit lights, motors, etc.
  • Analyzes defects or malfunctions in electrical systems.
  • Has a working knowledge of maintaining and repairing building furnishings such as doors, door hardware, windows, furniture, projectors and projector screens, and other tasks related to the carpentry trade.
  • Has a working knowledge of maintaining and repairing plumbing systems, including flush valves, faucets, commodes, water lines, water heaters, and other plumbing-related tasks.

Preferred Qualifications
Completion of high school and three years of progressive experience in the construction or repair of secondary electrical systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Prefer a North Carolina Electrical Contractor license.

  • Routinely and consistently performs widely varying, functionally diverse facility maintenance assignments requiring in-depth analysis and problem-solving of the most complex, non-routine building systems, using advanced skills related to the assigned trade area.
  • Serves as a technical expert within the work unit.
  • Guides, directs, and coaches others regarding application and interpretation of technical issues.
  • Applies and interprets technical knowledge to resolve unique or highly complex situations.
  • Analyzes and researches appropriate solutions.
  • Has a thorough and extensive understanding of programs, concepts, and practices in the most complex mechanical systems trades area as well as a general understanding of one or more different trades areas.

CLIENT / CUSTOMER SERVICE:

  • Identifies and resolves trends and work issues that impact service delivery to groups or individual customers.
  • Makes recommendations to improve service delivery based on customer feedback.
  • Makes recommendations to streamline processes/procedures, remove barriers, and link resources for efficient and effective customer service.
  • Develops creative, alternative solutions to respond to complex service needs.

Monday through Friday, 6:00 am - 3:00 pm or 7:00 am - 4:00 pm. Because some educational areas are inaccessible during normal working hours, work schedules may vary.

This position is subject to call-back on evenings and weekends. This position may be required to participate in the "Primary" on-call program with Facilities Operations.

This position is considered MANDATORY and is expected to be available to work during University emergencies, closures, and adverse weather conditions.
