As a Lean Engineer I, you will support project team with applying Mortenson's kaizen-based continuous improvement approach, as well as 5S and Flow Construction, to enhance work safety, streamline processes, and improve project outcomes.

Responsibilities:
  • Partner closely with project leadership and craft workforce to establish trust and gain buy-in for lean approaches

  • Provide regular feedback to project leadership and the group lean leader on the application of lean approaches to assist in cross-project sharing, including craft workforce participation/engagement, the activities undertaken, and related outcomes

  • Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels

  • Support continuous improvement efforts onsite

    • Coordinate with the project team to plan and execute improvement events

    • Assist and facilitate portions of improvement events with the support of group and company experts

    • Provide support in reinforcing continuous improvement principles and ensuring ongoing application of essential tools after improvement events

    • Support forepersons on observing work, assessing adherence to standardized work, and addressing abnormalities effectively

    • Collaborate with forepersons to actively encourage crews to brainstorm and implement improvements on an ongoing basis

  • Support the project team, field leaders, and trade partners in applying 5S practices

    • Support the onboarding of new craft workforce and trade partners by communicating 5S standards

    • Create plans and resources to achieve 5S standards

  • Support flow and work management onsite

    • Actively participate in flow schedule development for relevant work phases

    • Support superintendents and forepersons to apply disciplined and consistent daily planning, work management, and learning approaches

    • Assist in promoting and maintaining continuous efforts towards one-piece flow for self-perform work and move away from batching practices

  • All other duties as assigned

Additional Information:

  • It is likely and anticipated for Mortenson team members to participate on traveling project assignments throughout their careers. Depending upon the operating group, frequent mobility may be required

Project Assignment:

You will have the opportunity to join our team in one of our many operating groups, with placement aligned by individual interests and evolving organizational priorities. Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Engineering or other science or mathematical related degree by summer 2027

  • Internship experience in construction or manufacturing

  • Are willing to be mobile / relocate frequently, for project assignments, based on needs of the business

  • Possess a current driver's license and have access to reliable transportation

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Have previous related internship experience

  • Have a basic understanding of construction and generally accepted business practices

  • Demonstrate strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills and show initiative and leadership

  • Showcase a positive and professional attitude and exemplary customer service skills

  • Are detail-oriented, organized, and can effectively handle multiple competing priorities

The base compensation range for this role is $70,200 - $99,900. This position is eligible for a potential annual bonus. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skill and experience with consideration given to internal equity.
