I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION






Job Description Summary:
The Department of Epidemiology is looking to hire a full-time Research Assistant for a research study funded by the National Institutes of Health. The study will be conducted in the GWU Hospital Emergency Department.

The primary responsibilities of the job will be: (1) acting as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) navigator and resource to the other research assistants (RAs) who work in the emergency department (ED); (2) working in the ED screening and identifying eligible participants, explaining study procedures and obtaining consent, conducting HIV prevention and PrEP medication counseling, providing patients with a PrEP Decision Support Tool and reviewing results with patients, helping to coordinate receipt of PrEP medication including making appointments for patients with community PrEP providers, and providing referrals to social services; and (3) conducting follow-up interviews with participants. It is expected that the candidate selected for this job will develop in-depth knowledge about PrEP and will be comfortable talking to patients, other research staff, and clinical staff about PrEP.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Interact with patients and clinical providers to screen, recruit, and consent participants, conduct surveys, collect data, and enter data into a computer.
  • Work with the study coordinator to ensure that the baseline and telephone follow-up interviews are conducted in a timely manner and as successfully as possible.
  • Conduct telephone follow-up with participants
  • Provide daily research support for the assigned research project and related activities, including informed consent, enrollment, data collection (i.e., conducting interviews), data entry, management, and review.
  • Interact with the clinical staff and ensure that study procedures do not disrupt clinical operations where patients are being treated
  • Attend mandatory study team meetings as scheduled and lead the review of enrollment and follow-up results.


Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • Employees are required to complete CITI and HIPAA certification if hired.
  • Employees will also be required to complete a PrEP Navigator training program if hired.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with HIV and other community-based organizations and populations at risk for HIV is preferred.
  • Strong interest in research and enthusiasm for interacting with people.
  • Strong Communication & Teamwork: Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate seamlessly with project staff, research team members, and emergency department clinical staff.
  • Independent & Detail-Oriented: Capable of managing tasks independently with high accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Computer literacy with Microsoft Word is desired.

Hiring Range $18.40 - $27.68
