Mechanical Engineer, Tool Hookup, Terafab

Tesla Motors, Inc.
United States, Texas, Austin
Oct 04, 2026
What to Expect

We are building Terafab, a vertically integrated semiconductor factory at unprecedented scale. Logic, memory, packaging, test, and lithography mask production in one facility, optimized for quick iteration and the highest density of compute.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will design, build, and commission the mechanical systems that bring process tools online for 2nm-class manufacturing. That includes tool install, pedestals and vibration isolation, and mechanical connections for UPW, bulk gas, chemicals, exhaust, and environmental control. This is a ground-up greenfield build, and you will own the complete tool hookup lifecycle from concept through commissioning at one of the most ambitious fab programs in the world.

This position is open across multiple levels. Level and title are based on your experience, skills, and overall qualifications during the interview process.

What You'll Do
  • Lead mechanical tool hookup for a greenfield 300mm fab, from concept through install and commissioning
  • Design and specify the mechanical interface between facility systems and process tools. Challenge industry norms to get tools in faster, with the best overall outcome
  • Own mechanical scope for process tools: PCW, UPW, process gases, chemicals, vacuum, exhaust, drains, pedestals, and vibration isolation
  • Partner with construction, facilities, and equipment vendors on tool install plans
  • Review facility matrices, drawings, and layout against fab infrastructure and cleanroom constraints
  • Coordinate mechanical install, including seismic anchoring, utility breakouts, and alignment to electrical and automation scope
  • Define IQ/OQ/PQ for mechanical tooling and the facility-tool interface. Support vibration, temperature, humidity, particle, and AMC requirements
  • Build install schedules for the production ramp. Close single points of failure and schedule risk, and coordinate EHS, SEMI S2/S8, and AHJ requirements

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent experience
  • 6+ years semiconductor mechanical tooling, tool install, or facilities-to-tool interface, including cleanroom work
  • Hands-on with multiple mechanical utility systems: UPW, process gases, PCW, HVAC/ECS, chemical distribution, and/or exhaust/abatement
  • Experience taking tools from facilities matrix through mechanical install and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with SMIF/FOUP automation, OHT, and vibration isolation for EUV-class lithography
  • Experience with a greenfield 300mm fab
  • Familiarity with SEMI S2/S8, AHJ requirements in Texas, and BIM tools (Revit, Navisworks)
