About the Role

The Springer Journals, Medicine & Life Sciences group is seeking a new Executive Publisher in the New York office to manage and develop the North American society journal portfolio.

The Executive Publisher drives the strategic growth, performance, and editorial development of a journal portfolio, while managing and developing a highperforming team and fostering strong relationships with editors, partners, and research communities.

This is a hybrid-working position offered in our New York or Philadelphia offices. The location strategy supports team structure and aligns business needs.

Responsibilities

Lead & Develop a High-Performing Team

  • Build a positive, engaged, and developmental team environment that promotes adaptability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Set, communicate, and review clear objectives that drive goal alignment between individual, team, portfolio, and organizational priorities.

  • Provide coaching, apply consulting skills, and encourage continuous improvement, professional growth, and autonomy.

  • Monitor well-being, support change readiness, and foster alignment with the employer brand while maintaining a high-performing culture.

Drive Editorial & Portfolio Strategy

  • Deliver journals with strong author experiences and high engagement from editors and EBMs through effective portfolio development and management.

  • Develop and implement portfolio strategies aligned with organizational priorities, market intelligence, industry trends, and emerging research opportunities.

  • Set and monitor KPIs and performance targets using data analytics, quantitative skills, and a data-driven decision-making approach.

  • Develop content acquisition and retention strategies leveraging scientific comprehension, business insights, and market opportunities to attract high-quality submissions.

Engage with Editors & Research Communities

  • Build networks and maintain strong relationships with EiCs, EBMs, peer reviewers, and research communities to strengthen portfolio performance and influence.

  • Monitor and improve editorial service levels, author satisfaction, and manuscript handling times using performance metrics and continuous improvement practices.

  • Identify community needs, emerging research developments, and industry trends (e.g., Open Science, OA, increasing output) and translate them into strategic portfolio initiatives through business insights and strategic thinking.

Manage Society & Institutional Partnerships

  • Explore and acquire new opportunities with leading societies, associations, and journal owners through business development, market assessment, and strategic partnership planning.

  • Maintain and grow relationships with key societies, institutions, and publishing partners through effective engagement and network building.

  • Ensure excellent service delivery for publishing partners and proactively address service issues through strong stakeholder management and consulting skills.

Implement Strategy, Policies & Workflows

  • Ensure team understanding and execution of strategic priorities through clear communication, accountability, and goal alignment.

  • Apply market intelligence, data analytics, and business insights to guide portfolio decisions and drive sustainable growth.

  • Lead adoption of new workflows, systems, and policies in collaboration with internal stakeholders, demonstrating strong adaptability and change leadership.

Contribute to the Wider Journals Division

  • Participate in cross-departmental projects and working groups, contributing expertise, collaboration, and strategic perspectives.

  • Collaborate with Publishing Directors and peers to support wider organizational goals and drive business success through a strategic mindset.

  • Act as a subject-area champion, leveraging scientific comprehension, industry expertise, and professional networks to enhance visibility and influence.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred in Medicine, Life Sciences, Scientific Research, Publishing, Business, or a related discipline.

  • 5+ years of experience contributing to or leading the strategic management of a journal or publishing portfolio, including performance management, growth, and long-term planning.

  • 2+ years of leadership experience managing and developing high-performing teams, including coaching, objective setting, and leading through change in complex or matrixed environments.

  • Experience managing journals at a Senior Publisher level or equivalent preferred.

  • Proven experience building and maintaining relationships with academic societies, institutions, journal owners, editors, and research communities, demonstrating the ability to build networks and influence stakeholders.

  • Strong expertise in portfolio development and management, strategic planning, and aligning portfolio objectives with business goals.

  • Advanced data analytics and quantitative skills, with experience using KPIs, performance metrics, and business insights to drive decision-making and portfolio outcomes.

  • Deep understanding of the scholarly publishing ecosystem, including editorial workflows, peer review, research integrity, Open Access, Open Science, and emerging industry trends, supported by strong scientific comprehension and market intelligence.

  • Demonstrated strategic mindset, commercial acumen, and business development capabilities, with the ability to identify growth opportunities and deliver sustainable business outcomes.

  • Exceptional stakeholder management, communication, consulting skills, adaptability, and cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to align diverse stakeholders around shared goals and organizational priorities.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $115,000 - $135,000. This role is eligible for an annual performance-related bonus plan. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
