Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Pediatrics of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is the organizational unit. The primary purpose of the department is teaching, research and patient care in those issues involving the needs of children, with particular emphasis on the children of eastern North Carolina.
Mt. Olive Children's Advocacy Center of the Department of Pediatrics is in accord with this primary purpose. This purpose will be achieved by providing1) comprehensive evaluation and specialized treatment of children and caregivers who have experienced trauma 2) an educational resource for students and professionals and the community in eastern North Carolina regarding child abuse, neglect, and trauma.
Mt. Olive CAC serves abused and neglected children, ages birth to 18, and their non-offending family members by providing child medical evaluations; forensic interviews; individual, group, and family therapy; community development, outreach education for individuals and groups, and child abuse prevention programming. The agency also collaborates with ECU Health by providing in-house child abuse consults.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide extensive mental health evaluation, assessment, and treatment to adults and children who have experienced childhood abuse. Non-offending adults whose children have been abused are also eligible for therapy services. The assessment will include comprehensive evaluation of trauma symptoms, behaviors, psychosocial functioning, and issues pertaining to abuse/neglect to diagnose and develop comprehensive treatment plans. The therapist will provide short and long-term individual, group, and family therapy utilizing a variety of therapy methodologies including EMDR, TFCBT, CPT, CBT, and play therapy. The therapist will also consult with other professionals as needed regarding assessment and treatment issues, family dynamics, treatment techniques, and community resources. Court testimony as an expert witness on behalf of the child and family is expected. This position sees patients at Mt. Olive Children's Advocacy Center.
Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Bachelor's degree in a Human Services discipline with coursework related to the area of assignment. Some positions may require certification to practice as a certified or licensed Clinical Social Worker as required by the North Carolina Social Work Certification Board. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist ( LMFT) or Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor ( LCMHC) will also be considered. All licenses must be current with their respective Board and unrestricted.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • 4+ years of therapeutic counseling experience in mental health service field
  • Training and experience with crisis intervention, child and adult trauma, and family violence
  • Specific experience with assessment and treatment for trauma

License or Certification required by the Department
Licensed Clinical Social Worker ( LCSW) preferred. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist ( LMFT) or Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor ( LCMHC) will also be considered. All licenses must be current with their respective Board and unrestricted.
