About the Position

The Medical Assistant Lead serves as a clinical and operational leader supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care in both public health clinics and mobile health settings. This role performs hands-on clinical duties, including patient intake, registration, phlebotomy, specimen collection and preparation, point-of-care testing, medication and vaccine administration, insurance verification, payment processing, and clinical documentation. The position also provides leadership in staff coordination, workflow management, quality improvement, and efficient clinic operations while supporting healthcare providers during patient encounters and care coordination activities. The Medical Assistant Lead ensures the Public Health Clinic and Mobile Health Unit are prepared and operating effectively and participates in community outreach and mobile clinic events that expand access to care for underserved populations. When the Mobile Health Unit is not in operation, this role supports Public Health Clinic operations to ensure continuity of care and service delivery.

We Require

  • Two years of experience working in the medical field as a Medical Assistant, including venipuncture experience and experience administering vaccines or other injections

  • Experience in the use of electronic medical records

  • Certificate of Completionas a Medical Assistantfrom an accredited Health Care Training Program

  • High school diploma or GED

Job Contributions

  • Prepares patients for appointments and facilitates efficient patient flow on the Mobile Health Unit and clinics

  • Performs routine clinical duties, including vital signs, specimen collection, lab specimen preparation, phlebotomy, injections, Point of Care (POC) testing, and patient preparation for examinations and procedures

  • Assists providers with examinations, treatments, diagnostic testing, and procedures in accordance with established protocols and the scope of practice

  • Performs, documents, and maintains quality control for Point of Care and lab testing equipment and procedures in compliance with regulatory standards

  • Accurately documents patient care, laboratory results, treatments, and services in electronic health record systems and other required documentation platforms

  • Registers patients for services, collects and processes insurance and payment information, prepares deposits, and maintains accurate financial and registration records in accordance with department procedures

  • Ensures the Mobile Health Unit, clinic, and examination areas are clean, stocked, organized, and equipped with necessary medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and outreach materials

  • Assists in supervising clinic operations, Mobile Health Unit operations, and outreach activities by monitoring workflow, providing direction to staff, and resolving operational or customer service concerns

  • Maintains collaborative relationships with community partners, participates in outreach events serving high-risk and underserved populations, and assists with outreach planning and community engagement activities

  • Maintains compliance with infection prevention, safety, confidentiality, and regulatory requirements related to healthcare services

  • Provides clinical support services during regular clinic hours, assigned weekend and evening coverage, including travel to clinic and outreach sites throughout Maricopa County to support patient care services in community-based settings

Working Conditions

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel

  • Ability to exert up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly, and requires walking/standing to a significant degree

  • Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire

  • Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency

  • Must secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card and complete a background check

  • Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
