Job Description

Provides frontline library services to a diverse population of users at the North and West Service Desks during the combined 200 hours they are open during the regular semester. Processes local materials and materials from other UM and MOBIUS libraries. Assists with other Circulation tasks, such as course reserves or hold shelf materials. Adjusts work schedule as needed when library hours change. Acts as backup when necessary to ensure the Service Desks remain open during normal hours.

Key Job Duties:

Frontline Desk Duties (applies to all Circ staff):
- Assists library users via phone, email or in-person with basic reference questions, policy inquiries, procedural questions, and inquiries about their library account. Knows how and when to refer questions as appropriate.
- Checks out / checks in books, journals, equipment, and other circulating library materials to library users.
- Monitors the public exits and door alarms as needed; may engage with patrons who set off these alarms.
- Works with Library Safety/Security team to resolve Lost & Found items and inquiries.
- Opens/Closes the North or West Service Desk areas as needed.
- Assists with borrowing cards applications; issue cards as appropriate.

Backend Circulation Staff Tasks (applies to some staff once trained):
- Processes incoming and returning materials from MU campus libraries, UM Libraries, and other MOBIUS libraries.
- Provides support for library print and electronic reserve services.
- Provides assistance as needed with Hold Shelf tasks, equipment tasks (Ellis and DST equipment), Pickup Lockers, and problem book management.

Miscellaneous Duties:
- May assist with the training and supervising of student workers in consultation with the Night & Weekend Supervisor or Head of Circulation.
- Other Duties as assigned.

Shift

Mon-Thurs, 8am-5pm: Sun, 10am-7pm during regular academic semester hours. Work schedule varies when Library hours change, such as during semester breaks, intercession periods, or summer session. Work shift alters when needed as backup to ensure Service Desks are covered, including night and weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Six months of library experience. Directly related education or training may be substituted for experience.
- Supervisory experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Ability to explain issues clearly and work to satisfactorily resolve problems.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to work with others collaboratively and respectfully.
- Ability to exercise discretion and judgment including handling confidential patron information.
- Competence using computer software and equipment.

NOTE: This position requires some physical stamina and involves moving materials and related physical actions part of the workday. Must be able to move fully loaded book trucks on wheels (at least 200 lbs.). Must be able to read call numbers on books located on shelves at ground level and up to nine feet in height and where lighting is diminished; ladders and footstools are available.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $16-$16.70 hourly

Grade: GGS-6
