Ophthalmic Technician

General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is looking for an Ophthalmic Technician to provide technical support to Ophthalmologist for the Eye Center of Washington Hospital Center. The Ophthalmic Technician performs basic and specialized eye examinations on patients in the Eye Center.

Primary Duties:

• Performs preliminary screening and assessment of patients by documenting patient's medical history and performing basic eye examinations, including vision screening, pupillary reaction assessment, tonometry and extra-ocular muscle test.
• Performs specialized ophthalmic eye examinations and tests, including but not limited to, Goldman and Humphrey visual fields, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and slit lamp exams. Records observations in patient's records.
• Provides instruction and information to patients and/or family regarding test procedures, follow-up home care and medications.
• Assists physician in examinations/procedures. Cleans and prepares exam/procedure room between patients.
• Processes all medical record and prescription refill requests. Reviews all such correspondence with physician prior to processing.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 1-3 years experience such as secretarial or office experience demonstrating organizational skills and working familiarity of office computers (typing and spreadsheets) and clinical procedures in a hospital or medical setting required.
• COA - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, within 2 years is required.
