The App State
Academy at Middle Fork is a
UNC System lab school operated by Appalachian State University in partnership with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. It's an innovative learning community that is committed to creating pathways and opportunities for lifelong learning and positive community impact.
The Curriculum Coach leads instructional improvement across their grade level span by implementing evidence-based practices that increase student engagement, achievement, and teacher effectiveness. This role collaborates with teachers through co-planning, teaching, and assessment, supports professional growth, and fosters a reflective, culturally relevant learning environment while contributing to the school's leadership team. |
| Minimum Qualifications |
- Master's degree in Education
- Hold or be eligible for a NC teaching license in elementary education, K-6
- 3+ years of successful teaching experience

| Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
The Curriculum Coach serves as the instructional leader of their grade level span. They are responsible for bringing evidence-based practices into classrooms with the goal of increasing student engagement, improving student achievement, and building teacher capacity. The Curriculum Coach facilitates a learning environment that promotes team members to think deeply and critically about learning that is meaningful and relevant to their students' culture, lives, and future. They focus on individual and group professional development that will expand and refine the understanding of research-based effective instruction. The Curriculum Coach leads, supports, and participates in co-planning, co-teaching, and co-assessing within their grade-level span, working collaboratively with teachers to design instruction, analyze student learning, and implement responsive supports that meet the needs of all learners. The Curriculum Coach models professional behaviors conducive to building a collaborative and collegial working environment that is centered on team teaching. They also serve as a member of the Academy's leadership team.
Job Responsibilities & Duties
- Model and meet the expectations of the Portrait of a Lab School Team Member.
- Work collaboratively with teachers and other instructional staff to create fair, welcoming, and equitable classroom communities
- Assist team members in creating clear expectations and norms for classroom communities
- Model restorative practices to address learning and behavior needs
- Model and foster a growth mindset
- Actively engage with colleagues, school administration, the local community, and university partners to cultivate a collaborative school environment
- Develop and maintain a confidential, collegial relationship with team members
- Collaborate with the leadership team to support curriculum initiatives and academic programming
- Assist with the development of curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices
- Assist teachers to develop innovative, integrated, standards-aligned, and inquiry-based lesson plans that are student-centered and based on constructivist approaches
- Co-teach with team members during literacy and math blocks
- Model and support evidence-based collaborative teaching strategies that result in increased student performance
- Assist team members with designing instructional decisions based on assessment data
- Support team members in assessing the progress of their students and in using data to inform teaching strategies
- Support team members in analyzing student assessment data
- Facilitate weekly grade-level span PLT meetings
- Plan and facilitate instructional rounds in collaboration with the Principal and the Director of Curriculum
- Collaborate with team members to identify strengths and areas of expertise
- Collaborate with the leadership team to develop a strategic plan of professional development for team members
- Collaborate with the leadership team to lead professional development for team members
- Mentor Beginning Teachers
- Plan curriculum nights
- Work positively toward meeting identified school improvement goals
- Fully understand and follow the expectations set forth by the staff handbook
- Maintain appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and effective use of time
- Attend and be fully engaged in staff meetings, committee meetings, and school-wide events
- Engage in opportunities for enhanced professional development to stay current in innovative teaching practices affecting the whole child
- Follow a plan for professional development and demonstrate evidence of growth
- Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, families, and team members in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws
- Share responsibility during the school day for the supervision of students in areas of the school
- Comply with state and federal education statutes, including the NC Code of Ethics for Educators
- Adhere to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards
- Other administrative duties as assigned
