JOB SUMMARY:

This is a per diem position which includes Saturday clinic coverage. Involves primary eye care and disease treatment including diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as identifying related systemic conditions affecting the eye. May also involve the dispensing of eyewear. Triages and examines patients with complex eye-related issues and provides acute eye care. Performs routine and specialized contact lens fittings.
Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
- Provides optometric examinations including but not limited to: pupillary reflexes, tonometry, keratometry, evaluation of muscle balance, stereopsis, phorias, vergences, slit lamp examination, visual acuity, lensometry and indirect biomicroscopy.
- Provides routine eye examinations for new and established patients as well as follow-up exam for established medical patients in the ophthalmology practice.
- Performs eye examinations and contact lens fittings to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Performs triage and screening for acute or unscheduled patients in ophthalmology.
- Prescribes ophthalmic medications within the scope of practice.
- Assists in medication refills for the Department of Ophthalmology.
- Complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice. Complies with activities mandated by JCAHO and DHS.
- Participates in communicating the specific needs of patients to care providers.
- Ensures a professional and helpful working environment by upholding the House Standards as adopted by the Medical center Staff.
- Demonstrates courtesy, common sense and follow-through in all telephone communications.
- Orders and maintains contact lens fitting stock and supplies.
- Keeps informed of current trends and developments within optometry.
- Works within the ophthalmology clinics to provide support as needed.
- Adheres to the Medical Center and Departmental guidelines related to documentation of patient encounter notes, charge documents, and diagnostic study interpretation notes.
Metrics
- Responsible for meeting the Department's guideline for the wRVU productivity and/or patient care visits per half-day clinic session.
- Provides clinical services on on-call basis.
UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Health Professionals (AHP) to be credentialed through its Medical Staff Services Office (MSSO) in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric
AHPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al.). Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.
Must have a minimum of one year of work experience as a licensed optometrist.
Must be flexible to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

  • Must be able to work in a collaborative manner with staff, faculty, and members of the health care community across the campus.
  • Requires effective interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough professional skills in delivering eye care, treatment, and diagnostic services to patients.
  • Doctoral degree in optometry issued by an accredited school/college of optometry.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

  • Residency or Fellowship training cert
