Job Summary

This is manual work in the City's Municipal Parking Garages. An employee in this class, under direct supervision of the Superintendent of Public Parking, patrols all of the garages in the City providing security presence during the week-end night hours. This position is considered "essential personnel", and will be required to be able to respond to emergencies as needed. This position is primarily evenings and weekends.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Picks up City truck from assigned parking deck and begins patrol of all the City decks. Drives the truck throughout the decks, checking in every hour, by hand-held radio, with the City Switchboard. Employee gets out of truck and walks parts of the decks, such as stairwells and looks for people loitering about. Employee has authority to ask the people to leave or call the police if needed.
  • Provides assistance to customers who have parked in the deck, such as helping them get out of deck or giving directions.
  • Provides minor repair to money machines and other equipment.
  • Operates a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices on a regular basis.
  • At times, employee will be required to place "No Parking" signs on surrounding streets in accordance with the Parking Department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Three (3) months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:

  • Vehicle Operator's license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.

REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move about their assigned parking deck either on foot or assigned vehicle. The employee is occasionally required to sit and traverse and/or balance. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to communicate with others. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
