Custodial Services Supervisor

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) - Energy & Minerals Research Facility (EMRF)
Golden, Colorado

Position Summary

The Custodial Services Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily janitorial and custodial operations for the USGS EMRF facility. This position supervises custodial personnel, coordinates cleaning activities, conducts quality inspections, and ensures all services are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with contract requirements and facility standards. The role supports a clean, safe, and professional environment for laboratory, office, and common areas within a complex research facility operating 24/7.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate daily custodial and janitorial operations throughout the facility.

  • Assign work schedules, monitor staffing levels, and ensure adequate coverage for all required services.

  • Conduct routine inspections to verify cleaning quality, safety compliance, and contract performance standards.

  • Ensure proper cleaning procedures are followed for offices, laboratories, restrooms, common areas, and other facility spaces.

  • Monitor and maintain custodial supplies, equipment, and inventory levels.

  • Coordinate response to service requests, spills, emergencies, and special cleaning requirements.

  • Support implementation of the Quality Control Program (QCP) and correct identified deficiencies.

  • Maintain accurate records, inspections, and reporting requirements within FMMS/IBM Maximo or other assigned systems.

  • Train custodial personnel on safety procedures, equipment operation, infection prevention practices, and contract requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements, safety procedures, security protocols, and facility access requirements.

  • Coordinate with the Project Manager, Chief Engineer, COR, and other facility staff regarding operational needs and special events.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum three (3) years of custodial or janitorial experience in commercial, institutional, laboratory, or government facilities.

  • Minimum one (1) year of supervisory or team lead experience.

  • Knowledge of custodial methods, cleaning equipment, floor care procedures, and safety practices.

  • Experience managing schedules, inspections, and quality control activities.

  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain required federal background clearance and PIV credentials.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting federal government, laboratory, healthcare, or research facilities.

  • Experience using CMMS platforms such as IBM Maximo/FMMS.

  • Knowledge of environmentally sustainable cleaning practices and products.

Work Requirements
  • Must support facility operations during core operating hours and occasional after-hours activities as needed.

  • Must be capable of lifting custodial supplies and equipment and performing physical cleaning inspections throughout the facility.

  • Must comply with all USGS safety, security, and information protection requirements.
