Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Engineer - Downtown Minneapolis
Position Summary

The Downtown Minneapolis district energy system consists of central plant facilities, thermal systems, and an extensive steam and chilled water distribution network serving commercial customers throughout the downtown area.

Reporting to the Maintenance Manage, the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient maintenance and operations of plant equipment. This role is a hands-on position focused on maintenance of boilers, chillers, and auxiliary systems while supporting ongoing operational activities across the plant and distribution system.
The O&M Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring continuous plant maintenance and operations, responding to system demands, and maintaining equipment in accordance with safety, environmental, and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities

Principle Responsibilities/Key Results Areas



  • Review and become familiar with the Main Plant, standby plants, remote plants, and distribution system.
  • Place in service primary and auxiliary equipment for proper operation of the plant, take the necessary steps to protect personnel and equipment from harm in the event of an emergency situation.
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on plant equipment as directed.
  • Support job planning and interface with contractors for maintenance or project activities
  • Complete all necessary logs, records, maintenance documentation and plant paperwork as required.
  • See that all workstations are maintained in good order.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by plant management (i.e., facility cleaning, customer meter reading, etc.).



Requirements



Experience and Education



  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of steady work experience, working with steam and chilled water equipment, steam turbines and water pumps.
  • Must have a State of Minnesota First Class "A" Operating Engineer's License or obtain within 2 years. Exceptions can be made on a limited basis to allow 4 years to obtain (reduced wage until obtaining a State of Minnesota Second Class "A" Operating Engineer's License).


  • High School diploma or equivalent.



Knowledge and Skills



  • Knowledge and experience in working with steam and chilled water equipment, steam turbines and water pumps.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in adverse climate conditions.
