Position Summary

We are seeking an Assistant Maintenance Manager to support and help lead maintenance operations at our Gary Works site. This role is responsible for assisting in the management of a large fleet of heavy mobile equipment, ensuring reliability, safety, and execution of preventive maintenance programs in a demanding, industrial environment.

This position will work closely with the Maintenance Manager to drive equipment uptime, improve maintenance processes, and develop the maintenance team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support daily maintenance operations for a fleet of heavy equipment, including loaders, haul trucks, pot carriers, cranes, and material handlers
  • Assist in planning and executing preventive maintenance (PM) programs
  • Help manage and prioritize repairs, breakdowns, and scheduled work
  • Drive improvements in equipment reliability and uptime
  • Supervise and support mechanics across multiple shifts
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and in compliance with company and site policies
  • Assist in managing parts inventory, vendors, and outside services
  • Track and report on key maintenance metrics (PM compliance, downtime, costs)
  • Support training and development of maintenance personnel
  • Work cross-functionally with operations to ensure equipment availability

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance (steel mill, mining, construction, or similar environment preferred)
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of:
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Diesel engines
  • Mobile equipment maintenance practices
  • Experience with PM systems and maintenance planning
  • Ability to troubleshoot and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed to support operations
