Job Summary
The Director of Damage Prevention is responsible for leading and executing the company's damage prevention strategy to protect underground gas and electric infrastructure. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while driving a proactive culture of safety, awareness, and operational excellence across the organization. The Director oversees damage prevention programs, including line locating, excavation safety, public awareness, and contractor engagement, and partners with internal and external stakeholders to mitigate risk and reduce third-party damages.
Essential Functions
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Damage Prevention Program.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and industry standards.
- Oversee damage prevention teams responsible forlocating, marking, and auditing excavation activities.
- Build andmaintainrelationships with regulators, municipalities, contractors, and 811/One-Call organizations.
- Direct investigations of third-party damages, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Track and analyze damage prevention metrics and implement performance improvements.
- Lead public awareness and education initiatives related to excavation safety.
- Support continuous improvement through audits, training, and process enhancements.
- Collaborate with operations and construction teams to ensure compliance with excavation protocols.
- Provide leadership during emergency response situations.
- Manage departmental budgets, staffing, and strategic initiatives.
Education Description
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Construction Management, or related fieldrequired or at least eight (8) years of relevant experience with gas and/or electric operations, business, construction management or engineering if non-degreed.
- Advanced degree preferred.
Experience
- Requires a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in utility operations, damage prevention, or related field.
- Requires a minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of damage prevention practices, linelocating, and excavation safety.
- Experience working with contractors, municipalities, and regulatory agencies.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive performance.
- Experience with damage investigations and performance metrics preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability tooperatea computer and standard office equipment.
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
- Occasional field visits require walking on uneven terrain.
- Ability to travel to field locations as needed.
Working Conditions
- Work performed in both office and field environments.
- Exposure to outdoor conditions and active construction sites during field visits.
- May require extended hours, weekends, or emergency response support.
- Position is safety-sensitive and subject to company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Required to participate in CenterPoint Energy's All-Hazard Operation Plan (AHOP).
