THE POSITION
-
As a Forest Technician with the Department of Agriculture, you will play an important role in protecting trees and landscapes from the Spotted Lanternfly. This job gives you hands-on experience in surveying, monitoring, and supporting pest management efforts. Your work will help protect communities, farms, and natural areas. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports pest survey activities and helps identify and track the presence of the Spotted Lanternfly across Pennsylvania. As a Forest Technician, you will perform the following duties:
- Property Contact: Communicate with property owners to explain survey needs and request access
- Trap Placement: Follow survey guidelines to place, maintain, and remove monitoring traps
- Specimen Handling: Remove insects from traps and submit samples on schedule to laboratory staff
- Visual Surveys: Inspect host plants for signs of infestation or other pest activity
- Site Assessment: Identify suitable properties for treatment or ongoing survey work
- Data Recording: Collect and enter survey information using electronic devices and logs

- Seasonal, full-time employment with no health care benefits. There is not an option to buy into health care benefits. The season runs from approximately March until November at which the employee is placed on leave without pay.
- Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- This position is home headquartered in Allegheny County. You will be expected to travel in the field for this position.
- This position is home headquartered. In order to be home headquartered, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- An associate's degree in forest technology; or
- Completion of equivalent formal education in forestry.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
Conditions of Employment:
- This position requires possession of a valid PA non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.
Other Requirements:
- PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
