Position Summary: The Controls Engineer II is responsible for designing and implementing PLC based machine control systems for automated and semi-automated production equipment. Design work includes PLC programming, electrical cabinet design, and specification and sourcing of electrical and electro-mechanical hardware. Build electrical cabinets and panels for projects when required. This position is also responsible for programming and the integration of robots for assembly and machining operations. Support existing PLC and robot-based equipment to maintain factory throughput. FLSA: Exempt Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Communicate with Mechanical Engineers to generate concepts, detailed sequence of operations, and specify special electro-mechanical hardware to meet project requirements.
- Manage individual projects to synchronize with mechanical hardware delivery to meet final project deadlines. Document project progress with established project tracker for communication to team members and management.
- Provide detailed documentation for PLC and robotic programs, I/O lists, bills of material, and electrical schematics. Maintain documentation if modifications are required.
- Wire and build complete electrical panels, cabinets, and HMI displays. Wire completed machinery.
- Thoroughly debug control systems with the mechanical engineer to meet SIG machine spec runoff requirements, NFPA 79 electrical, and OSHA safety standards.
- Quickly respond to trouble shoot existing production equipment to maintain output. This includes specialized assembly and test equipment, automated CNC equipment, and robotic systems.
- Resolve quality issues by applying sensor, vision technology, and fail-safe controls programming.
- Communicate with all levels of production management and engineering regarding project status and troubleshooting duties.
- Work with Manufacturing Engineers to generate detailed machine specifications for turnkey, automated systems.
- Recommend and implement technological alterations and enhancements for machine control systems and automation to reduce manufacturing cost and improve throughput.
- Perform as a technical leader for production personnel.
- Participate in and sustain 5S Standards.
- Must follow all required Safety and ISO procedures.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Education/Experience & Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent required, Bachelor's Degree in Manufacturing, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline required, with 3-6 years of previous experience.
- Proficient in using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Familiarity with Monday.com.
- Proficiency with multiple PLC software packages including but not limited to Allen-Bradley and Mitsubishi.
- Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form. Written and verbal communication of complicated subjects is required.
- In-depth knowledge of servo driven systems, load cells, sensors, and HMI displays.
- In-depth knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics.
- In-depth knowledge of NFPA 79 electrical and OSHA safety standards is preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of programming robotic systems is preferred.
- Basic CAD skills for documentation of electrical schematics and panel layout.
- Project management skills.
Working Conditions:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer using a keyboard and mouse performing repetitive tasks.
- Ability to open file cabinets, reach with hands and arms, bend, and twist, lift and move files.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
- Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. Security Mandates.
