Performs a variety of specialized pacemaker/cardiac laboratory duties to assist in the evaluation and treatment of cardiac patients. Compiles patient history and preps patient for procedures. Technical duties may include cardiac monitor analysis, pacemaker threshold testing, cardiac defibrillator and pacemaker testing and reprogramming, and computerized database system administration. Provides basic interpretation of data under physician guidance.

Note: Specific responsibilities assigned/required may vary dependent upon campus location.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Obtains and reviews patient history information prior to testing. Prepares patient and explains procedure. Answers patient questions within scope of authority and alerts the physician or nurse to questions or concerns requiring their attention.
2. Performs EKGs, edits directories and performs computer tasks in MUSE cardiovascular information system.
3. Performs Exercise Tolerance Testing (ETT), including patient prep and explanation, under the direction of the MD.
4. May assist NP by monitoring patient during Implantable Loop procedure.
5. Proficient in using monitoring device that will capture rhythms, blood pressures and pulse ox readings during Tilt testing. Must learn operation of tilt table.
6. Responsible for gathering patient information pre-Tilt and ILR procedures.
7. Applies cardiac and blood pressure monitors and instructs patients on proper use of monitor.
8. Performs pacemaker telemetry.
9. Performs cardiac monitor analysis and notifies covering Licensed Independent Practitioner of abnormal findings.
10. Performs pacer interrogation (dependent upon campus location). Evaluates pacemaker and defibrillator patients via threshold testing and reprograms devices per MD order.
11. Serves as a resource for staff in troubleshooting clinical and technical issues.
12. Performs basic troubleshooting and repairs of various equipment, including, but not limited to, EKG (Electrocardiogram) and ETT (Exercise Tolerance Test) equipment. Coordinates repair resolution with Clinical Engineering as necessary.
13. Completes required documentation for all tasks, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:
1. High School diploma or equivalent required.
2. Completion of an accredited program in Medical Office Assisting (MOA) at an accredited school.
3. Knowledge of office and laboratory procedures required.
4. Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant or Medical Office Assistant from ARMA, AAMA, AAHA, AMT, NHA, National Center for Competency Testing or the Monty Technical School.
5. Certification is required and must be maintained.
6. BLS certification required.
7. Successful completion of the pacemaker interrogation competency or MUSE CVIS System Administration competency required.
Preferred:

Experience/Skills:

Required:
1. Minimum three years progressively responsible experience in cardiac testing.
2. Demonstrated proficiency in performing pacemaker telemetry, cardiac monitor analysis and pacemaker interrogation (dependent upon campus requirements).
3. Experience and proficiency in utilizing computer information systems within a cardiac unit. Working knowledge of medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols.
4. Demonstrated analytical skills with strong attention to detail.
5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to provide information to patients, and to prepare accurate documentation.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
