The DME Specialist Sleep Medicine is responsible for the assessment of patients' needs specific to durable medical equipment. Working primarily with Sleep Medicine patients, the DME Specialist will ensure patients are provided the appropriate product for the diagnosis, the product is fitted appropriately and the patient is educated in the requirements of the product to maximize treatment for each patient.

Job Relationships

Reports to Respiratory Therapist Lead and Operations Manager.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Patient Education & Setup: Educate patients on sleep disorders, proper CPAP usage, mask fitting, maintenance, and cleaning. Provide assessment of appropriate product specific to patients' diagnosis, proper fitting, patient education on application, use, care and expected outcome for products as indicated by the physician and product manufacturers.

  • CPAP Compliance Management: Monitor therapy data, communicate with patients to increase adherence, and troubleshoot issues with mask fit or pressure.

  • DME Coordination: Process equipment orders, manage inventory, and coordinate with clinicians for setup and follow-ups.

  • Administrative Tasks: Verify insurance coverage for equipment, document patient interactions, and update patient records.

  • Technical Support: Inspect and clean returned equipment to prepare for reuse.

  • Educate application plans and provisions, financial responsibility, and collection of patient portion.

  • Ensure all necessary documentation and authorization is obtained to meet requirements of compliance.

  • Track, maintain, and order inventory.

  • Collaborate with Supervisor to coordinate coverage and scheduling of others working in DME.

  • Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedure.

  • Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.

  • Provide excellent customer service and adhere to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.

  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.

  • Prior DME experience preferred

Licenses/Certificates

  • Current CPR certification per American Heart Association guidelines.

Work Environment

  • Physical agility, strength, and endurance in a variety of settings. The individual must be able to transport medical and /or treatment equipment.

  • Occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials may result from the performance of the employee's duties. Skin, eye, mucous membrane, and /or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials is reasonable.

  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, have good mobility skills and be able to walk long distances.
