Job Summary

Position requires CSPI certification. We are not currently offering training.

Position is remote but must reside in Colorado

Under general supervision, provides emergency information and treatment recommendations by phone to consumers and health care providers. Promotes public and professional education in the field of toxicology. Provides consultation and supervision to Poison Information Providers (PIP).

Essential Functions:

  • Rocky Mountain Poison Center (RMPC) call handling: manages hotline calls by using approved resources and documenting each call in database, triages the case via phone for home observation and treatment or referral to health care facility with subsequent guidance to health care providers. (20%)
  • Manages complex exposures including (but not limited to): multi drug or multi substance exposure; overdoses; intentional or therapeutic errors; drug information questions; adverse drug reactions; patients receiving advanced treatments or invasive procedures; laboratory findings involving high level interpretation (ex: ABGs); physicians requesting toxicology consultation; health care professionals requesting treatment recommendations; cases requiring referral to health care facility; designated "Red Flag" exposures; any case in which a PIP has questions or needs clarification or they (PIP) cannot handle (20%)
  • Uses client approved resources for corporate cases, addresses inquiries for lay public and healthcare professional in a timely, courteous and professional manner. Documents each call accurately and completely in poison center database in timely manner. (15%)
  • Meets poison center expectations on essential metrics. (15%)
  • Completes client, Denver Health, RMPDS, and RMPC training as assigned. (15%)
  • Ensures confidentiality of client, customer and patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient's care. (15%)

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree Required

Work Experience:

  • Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse in the areas of Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, or Critical Care Required and
  • Poison Center or Contact Center with drug information and/or telephonic triage experience is preferred

Licenses:

  • RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; uses interpretation services when needed to assist callers.
  • Ability to quickly learn and interpret medical, pharmacological, and toxicological information, and determine when escalation is necessary.
  • Ability to work in a fast and intense environment with minimal supervision, responding to multiple inquiries (multi-task), utilizing specialized resources, following specific protocols and accurately documenting all information received and provided.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills; exercises initiative and professional judgment in selecting proper resources and actions.
  • Knowledge of techniques, methods and competencies of clinical nursing practices.
  • Knowledge of safety principles in a non-patient care environment.
  • Knowledge of standards, policies and procedures of Denver Health and RMPDS as they pertain to nursing.
  • Demonstrates advanced Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Demonstrates advanced computer proficiencies, including excellent typing skills and the ability to work among multiple databases.
