Summary

The Senior Medical Technologist reports to the Pathology Manager and works with a high degree of independence. This role may include responsibility for overseeing laboratory operations and personnel within a specific laboratory section. The Senior Medical Technologist performs non-routine, specialized, and/or innovative tests and analyses that require advanced problem-solving and research skills due to their complexity or developmental nature. Individuals are assigned to a specific laboratory section or discipline.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and assess the suitability of solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory procedures; prepare variations for specialized testing as needed.
  • Apply advanced knowledge and experience within a specific laboratory section to conduct and interpret routine, specialized, and/or innovative tests and analyses.
  • Participate in research projects within the assigned laboratory section, including the review, analysis, development, and implementation of new or improved clinical laboratory procedures and techniques.
  • Serve as a technical resource for laboratory personnel within the area of specialization by:
    • Providing guidance and direction on complex testing procedures
    • Troubleshooting equipment and instrumentation issues
    • Identifying causes of unusual or atypical reactions
    • Defining testing parameters and resolving difficult technical problems
  • Regularly review technical and professional literature (e.g., journals, research papers, books) to stay current on advancements, procedures, and innovations.
  • May contribute research findings and professional opinions to journals or other professional publications.
  • Provide clinical education and training for students and residents within the area of specialization, including:
    • Hands-on clinical supervision
    • Formal classroom instruction or presentations
  • May assist in interviewing candidates and making recommendations for staff selection.
  • May participate in staff performance evaluations.
  • May perform duties of a Pathology Technologist as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a closely related field, or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.
  • National certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist (ASCP or equivalent), or certification-eligible.
  • Advanced or Master's-level coursework in the area of specialization preferred; equivalent specialized work experience may substitute.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and instrumentation and perform all procedures within the assigned laboratory section with accuracy and proficiency.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to deliver patient care with consideration for:
    • Aging processes
    • Human developmental stages
    • Cultural diversity throughout the care process

Experience

  • Minimum of one year of specialized, job-related laboratory experience, in addition to any experience used to offset advanced formal education.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed in a laboratory setting with potential exposure to infectious materials, toxins, and other hazardous substances.
  • Requires physical and visual dexterity to perform and interpret clinical laboratory tests.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, work at laboratory benches, and lift laboratory supplies as needed.

Pay Range:

$32.56-$53.71
