Overview:

We are seeking a Materials Engineer with a strong foundation in materials science and mechanical engineering to contribute to R&D efforts focused on mechanical behavior and underlying material mechanisms. This position resides in the Mechanical Behaviors and Mechanics Group in the Materials in Extremes, Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist with coordinating research projects ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Administer daily operations and maintain compliance with safety protocols.
  • Conduct routine experiments and analyze data to support research objectives.
  • Document experimental procedures, results, and technical reports for internal dissemination.
  • Implement new methodologies and recommend improvements to enhance research outcomes.
  • Apply knowledge to evaluate material's performance and identify opportunities to optimize processes.
  • Communicate research findings and collaborate with stakeholders to drive project success.
  • Develop materials evaluation procedures and provide technical support to project principal investigators
  • Complete training activities for professional development.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in experimental mechanics, materials science and engineering or mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering or a closely related field.
  • Experience in high-temperature experimental mechanics and mechanical behavior

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Solid background in materials science, with a focus on mechanical behavior and deformation and failure mechanisms
  • Ability in experiment design, and hands-on mechanical property testing
  • Familiarity with relevant ASTM or ISO standards for mechanical testing is a plus
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or similar) for processing experimental results
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong technical documentation and reporting skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
