The Supervisor of Phlebotomy and Processing will be responsible for guiding both phlebotomy and lab tech staff by ensuring specimen collection, delivering and processing of laboratory specimens is performed in compliance with federal, state, and regulatory agency standards. They are also responsible for maintaining up to date policies and procedures, efficiently overseeing personnel and technical problems, as well as day to day operations to keep he department functional. The Supervisor ensures regulatory compliance and competencies for their area of responsibility. They are also engaged in performance of laboratory operations and will work closely with other supervisory staff in the department.

Essential Functions:
  • Operations Management
    Routinely monitors and observes to ensure collaboration, understanding of issues, and workflow with observational opportunities of staff work performance. (20%)
  • Policy and Practice
    Assists in developing and implementing functional policies and procedures (20%)
  • Inventory and Equipment Management
    Ensures proper equipment is in place for both phlebotomy and processing in all necessary areas. (10%)
  • Budget and Finance
    Assists the Administrative Director with budget oversight to ensure cost-effective care and ensure a balance of FTE's, supplies, and replacement of equipment. (10%)
  • Training
    Ensures cross-training and perform phlebotomy and processing as needed. Ensures training competency checklists are completed and discussed with the employee to establish developmental, training or remedial training needs/goals. Oversees competency testing and professional standards of the phlebotomy and processing teams. (10%)
  • Staff Management
    Completes annual evaluations in a timely manner providing staff with documented feedback and action plans reflective of challenging opportunities for growth and improvement. Sets clear expectations for behavior, productivity, mentoring, and setting of developmental goals. Completes coaching and disciplinary actions in a timely manner after careful investigation. (20%)
  • Regulatory Compliance
    Participates in tracers, mock surveys, and survey activities in order to maintain compliance with accrediting agencies. (10%)

Education:
  • Associate's Degree Required

Work Experience:
  • 4-6 years A minimum of four years of experience as a phlebotomist Required and
  • 1-3 years Prior supervisory or lead experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting Required

Licenses:

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of medical terminology and phlebotomy and processing procedures.
    • Excellent communication, time management, teaching, and organizational skills. Demonstrates skills in accomplishing operations of the section through personal organization and time management, adaptability, motivation and good decision making.
    • Ability to lead, motivate and coach employees in addition to acting as a team player in the Laboratory Operations Team.
    • Ability to handle all patient, visitor, and hospital staff concerns in a professional manner in compliance with the Mission and Values of Denver Health.
    • Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook.
    • Knowledge of patient rights and laws relative to those rights, such as HIPAA
    • Ability to remain calm in emergency situations.
    • Knowledge of safety and infection control practices to ensure a safe environment of care
    • Familiar with regulatory compliance in quality control and competency requirements.
    • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
