THE POSITION

If so, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is excited to welcome a motivated Survey Technician to join the team in District 11. Within this role, you will perform advanced technical tasks, using both manual and electronic tools to collect essential surveying data for various transportation-related construction projects. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Survey Technician, you will perform various technical activities required for measuring exact locations of points and areas relating to the engineering needs of district transportation projects. Duties will involve operating and maintaining advance or standard surveying equipment and electronic instruments, including but not limited to electronic total stations, automatic and digital levels, data collectors, laptop computer, GPS equipment, and other equipment which is needed to perform, record, and process survey data. It is essential to be able to accurately read a range of measurements within one one hundredth of a foot with or without corrective lenses.

Within this role, you will also assist the Transportation Surveyor Technician Supervisor in preparing survey notes and sketches, as well as performing algebraic and trigonometric computations and rechecks computations made by others. You will be expected to make field decisions regarding location and recording of traverse and topography points, in addition to effectively communicating with fellow workers orally and by hand signals and radio while conducting assignments.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, on an ad-hoc, emergency basis only, subject to managerial approval. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bridgeville. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Three years of experience as a member of a survey corps which included duties operating both standard and electronic surveying instruments; or
  • One year of experience as a member of a survey corps which included duties operating both standard and electronic surveying instruments, and an associate's degree in surveying, drafting, design, civil or any other appropriate field of engineering technology.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
