About the Job

Located in the Department of Writing Studies, the Writing Center's (WC) primary focus is on providing consulting and programming services to support student writing for all UMN students. The coordinator will report to the WRIT department chair and will be responsible for developing programming that reflects Writing Studies/CLA's priorities. They will supervise a staff of part-time consultants and will work with the WRIT department leadership on HR matters. The coordinator will work closely with the WC Center Administrator to support the service and programming operations of WC. This position requires strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills; a high level of independence, self-direction, and resourcefulness; and expert knowledge of administrative functions and University policies, procedures, and systems. This role will have limited remote options and will be based in an office setting on the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus.

Appointment Details: 100%, 10-month appointment (plus 1 month summer salary appointment)

Work location/modality: Onsite with some hybrid flexibility

Job Duties:

Program Development (30%)

  • In collaboration with department chair and leadership, vision and execute programming that reflects Writing Studies'/CLA's priorities for WC and targets current areas of high need (GenAI; FYW; multilingual writers).
  • Develop partnerships that increase the accessibility, engagement, and relevance of the programming WC offers.
  • Represent student writing support at college and University student-facing events to promote services and visibility.
  • Develop a communication plan for WC that provides up-to-date information about programming, supports visibility, and maintains a strong network of partners to cross-promote and engage students with WC resources.

Administration and Oversight (30%)

  • Oversee the implementation of programming/consultation schedules.
  • Develop and implement an evaluation plan to collect and assess data related to the usage (patterns, modes, capacity) and quality and impact of services.
  • Utilize usage data to maximize usage and accessibility for all modalities.
  • Develop and propose an annual staffing plan to the WRIT department chair that reflects budget resources and supports the department/college's priorities for WC.
  • Approve time sheets ensuring consultants are paid on time and correctly.

Human Resource Management (30%)

  • Manage graduate and undergraduate consultant hiring and performance management; assigns, monitors, and adjusts workloads.
  • Develop and offer annual and ongoing consultant training.
  • Coordinate and conduct regular cycle of observations and check-ins/coaching for consultants.
  • Oversee handbook revision process ensuring relevant and up-dated policies, procedures, and resources are available to support consultants.
  • Address absenteeism/consultant cancellation issues to minimize disruption to clients.
  • Actively promote an environment that supports inclusion and accessibility for consultants and clients.

Other (10%)

  • Directly participate in delivering programming (whether 1-1 consulting or other) for minimum 2 hours/week.
  • Maintain knowledge of current scholarship related to student writing support, writing centers and pedagogy; student development in higher education; supporting equity and diversity in learning environments.
  • Participate in on-going professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in writing studies, technical & professional communication, English, English language learning, or other relevant field plus at least five years of related experience, or a master's degree in a relevant field plus at least three years of related experience
  • Experience in a writing center or student support services
  • Leadership experience that includes strategic planning that is responsive to budgets and/or to evaluation data
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving equity, inclusion, and accessibility and experience with supporting student writers with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Experience supervising and/or mentoring and providing professional development for graduate and undergraduate student employees
  • Outstanding communication, project management, and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in writing studies, composition, rhetoric, technical & professional communication, literacy education, English
  • Experience with academic technologies related to writing instruction, language learner support, and writing across the disciplines
  • Experience with the collection, analysis, and presentation of qualitative and quantitative data for various stakeholders
  • Familiarity with current research on writing pedagogy, writing center pedagogy and practice
About the Department

The Department of Writing Studies provides First-Year Writing courses required for all University students, a Bachelor of Science degree in Technical and Written Communication, an undergraduate certificate in Technical Communication, an MA degree and a doctorate degree in Rhetoric and Scientific & Technical Communication, and an MS degree in Scientific and Technical Communication. The Writing Center provides in person and online writing consultations for all University students.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $62,000 - $85,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
