Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The James E. Shepard Memorial Library provide resources and services, which support the University's educational, research, cultural, and public service objectives. This mission strengthens NCCU's mission by providing students (e.g., on-campus, distance, graduate, and professional) with physical space, resources, specialized personnel, and services to engage in teaching and research. The Library and other libraries collaborate with various academic units to ensure the holistic development of NCCU students across academic and professional programs.
Primary Purpose of Position
Under the limited supervision of the Technical Services Librarian, the University Library Technician (Cataloger) performs two broad functions. First, job includes original and copy cataloging of books, monographs, serials, and audiovisual materials. The tools used to establish and maintain "authority control" over the material include Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2), and Resource Description and Access ( RDA) along with other vendor tools. Experience with Online Computer Library Center ( OCLC) WorldShare Management Services ( WMS) and Library of Congress (LC), knowledge of current practices, new technologies, and trends in bibliographic control are expected. Second, this position is responsible for instituting and receiving orders of new library materials, maintaining and working with the library's integrated automation system ( ALMA ExLibris). Other duties may include library database and electronic collections maintenance, formulating departmental policies, and circulation/reference desk coverage. Employee must exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the library public. Reports to the Head of Technical Services Department.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Able to learn job skills readily not only from instruction from others but also through experience and have the judgment to know when to consult with others. Participate in departmental and library related workshops, webinars, meetings and conferences when required or necessary. Requires meticulous and continuous attention to detail. Utilizes time properly, completes all assignments within a reasonable amount of time. Works constantly while on duty. Maintain an orderly stack and reading room, perform walk through and picking up materials that have been left on tables, carrels, etc., report areas needing building maintenance attention. Exercises professionalism in use of correct grammar, work attendance habits and attire. Ability to work independently and make initial decisions with a minimum of supervision. Perform basic reference work using materials in the collection and refers advanced questions to Reference Librarian or other Librarians for in-depth research. Maintains confidentiality of information exposed to in the course of library services regarding students, faculty, staff or other employees. Contributes to a safe educational and working environment by participating in all drills and training and being prepared to take action should a health or safety emergency occur. Working closely with staff from other departments of the library and Information Technology Services staff on services related to the library. Work assigned nights and weekends as scheduled by the Director of Library Services.
Minimum Education/Experience
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Competency Work Coordination/Planning
Duties
Initiates and receives orders of new library materials, books and DVDs. Receives new materials, checking condition and matching bills with invoices. Performs cataloging functions in a manner consistent with accepted professional library practice, under the direction of the Head of Technical Services. Obtains cataloging data for new materials from a variety of sources including - OCLC WMS, book vendors, bibliographic databases, and supervisor. Inputs cataloging data into the Library's integrated automation system ( ALMA ExLibris) either by importing computerized MARC Records or manually, assuring the accuracy of all records. Creates original cataloging elements, such as Cutter numbers, as necessary. Maintains consistency in the cataloging, classification, and physical processing of library materials. Maintain day-to-day copy cataloging statistics of library materials. Processes materials for circulation to include creating and/or affixing appropriate spine and bar code labels. Assists in maintenance of electronic (eJournals, eBooks, and streaming) databases. Assists with the pint maintenance of professional journals, magazines and newspapers collection: and checks in and shelves professional journals, magazines and newspapers issues received by the library and withdraws materials when needed.


Required Competency Communication and Consultation
Duties
Assist students with the use of library databases and print resources.
Answer questions that come in by phone, e-mail, in person, text message and by tweet. Refer students to librarians for research consultations when needed and be in place at the reference desk when scheduled to provide coverage. Provide excellent customer service to all library users (answer questions in a friendly manner, make eye contact with patrons, help patrons find what they are looking for or refer them to other staff members if you are unable to answer their question(s).

Duties
Actively participate in professional development activities during the year. Reference staff should participate in at least twelve professional development activities per year, six of the 12 should involve keeping abreast of the latest FDLP policies and procedures.

Duties
Respect library users, colleagues and administration. Report to work on time and as scheduled (call the immediate supervisor when you are unable to report to work). Report to assigned service desk on time and complete all reports and other projects within the allotted timeframe established.
