Title: Analyst - Health Communications

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan
Purpose: To serve as the recognized resource for health information product development and dissemination in the Tobacco Section. The position will effectively develop and implement paid media, earned media, social media, program materials, review and edit documents and presentations for accessibility and compliance with MDHHS Standards. This position will coordinate communications on trainings, be responsible for keeping website content up to date, and other program activities. The Tobacco Section utilizes community engagement strategies for all its work with communities. This position must also be competent and committed to providing safe and respectful communication and collaboration with all staff and communities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Health Education About Tobacco Prevention and Treatment
- Create and promote health education promotion content and materials to increase awareness of tobacco prevention, treatment, and policy efforts that result in a reduction in tobacco use, prevention of initiation and exposure to secondhand smoke.
- Create and identify prevention and tobacco dependence treatment materials, infographics, data visualizations.
- Update the Tobacco Section's website content.
- Promote cessation and prevention messaging to the public and hard to reach groups.
- Work with the MDHHS Public Information Officer, Communications staff, state partners, and contractors to fund, develop and disseminate a broad range of health communications. This may include new materials, media placements, arrangement of earned media opportunities, organizing community events, and recommending strategies to reach specific audiences.
- Collaborate with state and national partners on culturally appropriate earned and social media messages targeting those experiencing health-related disparitites.
- Provide earned media samples, suggestions, and resources to community and internal partners.
- Support community partners in developing culturally adapted education materials.
- Develop Tobacco Section newsletters and disseminate them to community partners and internal MDHHS partners.
- Share information and updates via the Tobacco Section's listserv.
- Support collection and dissemination of community and Tobacco Section program results and success stories.
- Develop and work with Communications on press releases and other documents.
- Ensure documents and materials comply with MDHHS and accessibility standard.
Grant and Funding Outcome Activities
- Monitor, track and analyze the Tobacco Section's contractor's health communications results including reach, impressions, and number of published press releases, letters to the editor and other articles for CDC and state outcome reporting.
- Participate in community and internal MDHHS meetings for the purpose of coordinating tobacco prevention and control communication and messaging across the state.
- Leverage Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Jewish Health, and other accessible tobacco-related creative content to disseminate information to the public, partners, and key interest holders. This may include communications, materials, and other scientific reports developed by the Media Campaign Resource Center, U.S. Surgeon General Food and Drug Administration, Truth, and Tobacco Free Kids.
- Work with program staff and local contract agencies to develop annual health promotion workplan objectives and activities.
- Provide ongoing technical assistance to local contract agencies to support achievement of workplan objectives.
- Attend and conduct assigned, bi-monthly conference calls with Tobacco Section contractors to build capacity and accomplish program objectives.
- Address inquiries and deliver presentations that require subject matter expertise.
- Conduct and participate in training sessions, conferences and workshops to train section staff, contract agencies, and partner agencies on communication strategies.
- Convene and/or attend meetings as needed and appropriate to promote understanding of program related, evidence-based strategies and objectives to partners and potential partners.
- Attend/participate in awardee meetings and conferences convened by the CDC and other key stakeholders as deemed required by the grant.
- Actively contribute to CDC grant reporting and application development.
Training
- Complete all departmental and grant required training.
- Support training and recruitment that are funded by the Tobacco Section.
- Support and co-develop webinars for TCP and partners.
Other
- Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, broadcasting, telecommunications, advertising, communications arts, public relations, or a related field.
Experience: Three years of professional experience preferred, including one year of advanced experience in implementing health campaigns, working with government agencies, and environmental changes initiatives. Experience in program areas as well as health communications preferred.

- Ability to select the best media placements to reach the intended audience.
- Ability to work effectively on a team to translate program findings and disseminate this information to key interest holders and the public.
- Ability to demonstrate commitment to community engagement, cultural proficiency, health equity and social justice.
- Ability to organize, evaluate, and present information effectively.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Ability to make basic website updates.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Requires valid vehicle operator's license and occasional travel within the State, including overnights. Less occasionally, travel may be required outside the State or work may be necessary outside of regular hours as deemed necessary. Invoices significant computer related activity such as viewing a CRT or VDT screen at least 75% of time. Standard office environment in Lansing, Michigan. Position is remote following MDHHS policy with some office time for meetings, events, and work requiring office location. Site visits and community visits as needed.
