HJF is seeking a Scientist II to provide technical and strategic support for ongoing research. Duties will include working with the Principal Investigator to conduct funded research projects and to develop new proposals and protocols. The work includes observational studies and clinical trials focused on understanding environmental exposures and cancer risks in Military Service Members, Veterans, and Dependents. The Scientist II will ensure fidelity to protocol, rigorous application of research methods, careful interpretation of data, and will support timely dissemination of findings in manuscripts and presentations.

This position will be in support of the Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics (PMB) Department located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland and hired through the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF).

  • Protocol Operationalization: Refines and operationalizes research protocols, coordinates collaborative efforts, trains and supervises students or staff, and ensures efficient and ethical implementation of complex projects.
  • Data Management, Analysis and Documentation: Manages and processes data from ongoing projects, analyzes data and interprets the findings, makes scientific observations, and maintains detailed documentation to professional and industry standards.
  • Literature Review: Develops and maintains expert-level knowledge of scientific literature regarding military exposures, social and occupational contexts, and health outcomes to provide context for study findings.
  • Grant Development: Provides structural editing and technical writing support for manuscripts, grant reports, grant renewals and funding applications (NIH, CDC, or VA).
  • Dissemination of Scientific Findings: Prepares written reports and lead-author or co-authored manuscripts for submission to high-impact scientific journals.
  • Other: May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Education and Experience

  • Doctorate Degree required in a relevant field (e.g., epidemiology, public health, psychology).
  • Minimum of 5 - 8 years research experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of applicable procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills. Demonstrated ability to translate technical research into clear, direct language for stakeholders including scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background.

Work Environment

  • Remote Work: This position is eligible for 100% remote work.
  • Future Structure: While currently a standard 40-hour exempt role, the department is open to job-sharing arrangements or part-time structures in the future as project phases evolve.
  • Travel: Domestic travel up to 5% of the time (e.g., for scientific conferences).

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $93,100-$95,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
