As a Mortgage Underwriting Manager, you'll have the opportunity to lead a team that delivers high-quality lending decisions and a consistently member-centric experience each and every day. This role oversees the residential underwriting team, ensuring loan quality, timely credit decisions, and strong collaboration across the mortgage process.

You'll partner closely with Loan Officers, Processors, Closers, Servicing, and other lending leaders to support an efficient flow of business and help more members achieve their homeownership goals. From guiding underwriting policies and credit parameters to monitoring performance and ensuring compliance, your leadership will directly impact both team success and member experience.

Your day might include:

  • Leading and overseeing the Mortgage Underwriting team, ensuring quality, accuracy, service performance, and effective workload management to meet SLAs
  • Underwriting first and second lien Conventional, Jumbo, FHA/VA/USDA, portfolio, saleable, and Affordable Housing loans, performing comprehensive credit, income, asset, and collateral analyses
  • Validating loan file completeness, confirming AUS findings, reviewing appraisals, and ensuring all eligibility, guideline, and closing conditions are met
  • Enforcing compliance with WSECU credit policy, portfolio standards, investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements, while responding to QC findings, audits, and investor stipulations
  • Applying specialized requirements including appraisal standards (USPAP), fraud detection practices, and flood regulations and insurance coverage
  • Issuing clear credit decisions, providing rationale, and recommending alternative loan structures for complex scenarios
  • Partnering with Mortgage Loan Officers (MLOs), Processors, Closers, Post Closing, and Servicing to resolve issues and support loan structuring and pipeline flow
  • Maintaining current knowledge of secondary market and regulatory requirements (FNMA, FHLMC, HUD, VA, USDA, HMDA, CFPB, BSA/OFAC) and communicating updates to the team
  • Developing, coaching, and evaluating team members; setting expectations, driving accountability, and fostering engagement and team cohesion

What you bring to the team:

  • Associate's Degree or higher; (relevant work experience in lieu of a college degree may be considered)
  • Six (6) or more years of supervisory or management experience in mortgage lending
  • Ten (10) or more years of related mortgage experience
  • Extensive knowledge of FHA, VA, HUD184, FNMA and/or FHLMC guidelines, credit, title, appraisals, insurances and mortgage workflows)
  • FHA Direct Endorsement designation and VA SAR designation required. Knowledge of business loan products
  • Proficiency with running, reading and interpreting AUS results including DU/LP and TOTAL Scorecard as well as underwriting portfolio products
  • Working knowledge of TILA-RESPA, HMDA, MDIA and Appraisal Independence Requirements (AIR).
  • Residential mortgage lending experience or knowledge

Competitive Base Pay: $137,643.87 - $206,465.80 annually, dependent on relevant qualifications, plus an annual discretionary incentive plan and benefits package

  • The target starting pay for this position is $137,643.87 - $172,054.83 annually, typically within the first half of the range. Actual offers will be based on individual qualifications relevant to the role and will not take an applicant's pay history into account.
  • The range above allows our employees room for growth through annual merit and other pay increase during their tenure in the position.

Where we're located: 330 Union Ave, Olympia WA. Employee must reside and perform all work in the state of Washington. This is a hybrid position that blends working in-office and from home. Works onsite two (2) days per week.

When you'd work: Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, full-time minimum 40 hours per week, with scheduling flexibility to meet service needs for this exempt position.
