| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Secretary of the University department reports to the Chancellor and is responsible for overseeing administrative and operational matters related to strategic initiatives and special projects for the University. This unit serves as the University's liaison between internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to: the Board of Trustees, Student Government, Employee Forum, and Faculty Council. The University's State Affairs and Federal Affairs departments report to the Secretary of the University - together the units jointly advocate for the University's priorities affecting higher education, while cultivating and building on relationships with the NC State legislature and U.S. Congress. Overseeing
UNC Public Affairs, this unit serves as the primary liaison between the University and policymakers at the federal and state levels. Charged with developing and advancing the University's policy agenda and expanding strong partnerships with our public officials. |
| Position Summary |
The responsibilities of the Director of Military Relations include developing and executing a comprehensive engagement strategy with each of the military installations in the State of North Carolina. The position will coordinate with federal affairs, state affairs, and research to ensure collaboration and cooperation on issues affecting higher education and our military, research and our military, and federal funding opportunities with our military partners. This position will also work closely with the NC Secretary of Military Affairs to ensure
UNC-CH is maximizing on all our assets to be the best partner to our military in the state of North Carolina. The position will coordinate with the
UNC System Office and their efforts around military and veterans' issues. The position will report to the Chief Strategic Officer and work closely with other members of the
UNC Public Affairs division. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience in marketing, communications, journalism, public affairs, or a related field; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution. |
| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Former Military personnel with knowledge of North Carolina military installations. Experience with strategy development and working within a fast-paced environment. Qualified applicants shall demonstrate an understanding of the mission, purpose, and organization of higher education institutions. |
| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Preferred qualifications include: experience and proficiency in Department of Defense research priorities and funding opportunities, a working knowledge of North Carolina political landscapes in relation to military installations. Strong and effective written and oral communication skills. |
