Position Summary Information












Primary Purpose
In general, the duties expected of a staff counselor are to contribute to the mission of the Counseling & Psychological Services Center by participating in all areas of service delivery.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related field, and eligibility for appropriate
licensure in North Carolina. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain licensure for the continuation of the appointment.
License/Certification Required
Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related field, and eligibility for appropriate
licensure in North Carolina (e.g. Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor / LCMHCA, Licensed Clinical Social Worker / LCSWA). The successful candidate will be expected to obtain licensure in North Carolina within one month of start date and maintain licensure for the continuation of the appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience in a university counseling center with a student affairs perspective.
2. Demonstrated interest, skill, and experience in one of the following areas:

  • Interest and experience in providing clinical services and outreach programming to student populations who may be less likely to seek counseling.
  • Interest and experience in using a variety of methods for engaging students to support their mental health, such as innovative outreach and development of self-help resources.


Candidates should also be committed to a proactive student development perspective involving an active relationship with the campus community; have demonstrated skills and interest in working with students from a wide range of backgrounds and identities; be team-oriented and collaborative with students, colleagues, and university staff; and have broad generalist clinical skills in assessing and intervening with a wide range of disorders, concerns, and degrees of pathology.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties of the position include:

  • short-term individual and couples therapy;
  • group therapy;
  • psychological assessment;
  • crisis intervention;
  • consultation;
  • outreach and psychoeducational workshops (sometimes after hours);
  • case management as needed;
  • liaison/consultant relationships with university partners;
  • rotating after hours emergency/crisis on call responsibilities as back-up to ProtoCall.
  • administrative duties and roles based on interest / experience and the needs of the Counseling Center.
