Description

Medica is a nonprofit health plan with more than a million members that serves communities in Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Missouri, and beyond. We deliver personalized health care experiences and partner closely with providers to ensure members are genuinely cared for.

We're a team that owns our work with accountability, makes data-driven decisions, embraces continuous learning, and celebrates collaboration - because success is a team sport. It's our mission to be there in the moments that matter most for our members and employees. Join us in creating a community of connected care, where coordinated, quality service is the norm and every member feels valued.

Medica will host a 12-week, paid Internship Program. Interns will have the opportunity to network within Medica and with other Interns through weekly Lunch and Learns and opportunities to hear from Executives. Each internship offers a meaningful experience and impactful projects you'll be able to discuss with future employers. At Medica, we look forward to our Summer Internship Program each year.

Medica's Medicare business now has over 265,000 members spanning six states across Medicare Advantage, Medicare Cost Plans and Medicare Supplement products. The Medicare Segment team seeks to engage a summer intern to support several high-priority, cross-functional projects that advance key strategic and operational initiatives. This role will deliver meaningful value to the segment while providing the intern with hands-on experience, exposure to healthcare strategy, and practical skills that support their long-term career development. Potential projects are described below and will be finalized based upon candidate interest and capacity. Performs other duties as assigned.

Key Accountabilities

  • Medicare AEP Competitive Reporting Framework Development

    • Support the development of a standardized AEP competitive analysis reporting package for the Medicare Segment by creating a clear template or storyboard that defines what reports are produced, how they are structured, and when they are available

    • Inventory existing and needed competitive reports (e.g., benefit comparisons, premium and cost sharing summaries, Star ratings, network and supplemental benefit comparisons), document the underlying data sources (e.g., CMS files, internal enrollment and pricing systems, and third-party market intelligence), and map the timing and cadence of data availability across the AEP calendar

    • The final deliverable will be a concise, reusable reporting framework that improves clarity, consistency, and readiness for AEP decision making across stakeholders

  • Cross Functional Medicare Retention Strategy Planning (2027)

    • Support a cross-functional team developing the 2027 Retention Strategy recommendation by providing research, analysis, and coordination support

    • Working alongside stakeholders from Marketing, Product, Sales, Stars, Member Experience, Care Management, Analytics, and Finance, the intern will help document current retention initiatives, summarize available performance insights, and track key assumptions and decisions

    • Assist with identifying potential new initiatives or pilot ideas through research and benchmarking, and support the preparation of materials that outline proposed tactics, expected value, and high-level budget considerations

    • Help ensure inputs from across the organization are clearly synthesized to inform a cohesive, data-supported retention strategy

    • The final output will inform leadership decision making by clearly summarizing recommended actions and investment priorities to strengthen the Medicare Segment's retention outcomes for 2027

  • Review of Competitor Health Plan Websites

    • Objective of this project is to assess how competitor health plans present their products, benefits, and member experience through their public-facing websites

    • Consider a defined set of competitor websites and understand how they communicate value, differentiate their offerings, and support prospective and existing members

    • Insights from this review will help inform improvements to our own digital experience, messaging, and content strategy

    • The final output will be a structured summary that compares key elements across competitor health plan websites and highlights notable strengths, gaps, and opportunities

  • Medicare Strategic Exposure & Learning Opportunity

    • The Medicare Segment can offer a rich learning environment for a summer intern, with frequent opportunities to observe and listen in on strategic planning, product, and performance review meetings. Through this exposure, the intern will gain firsthand insight into health insurance concepts, cross-functional, decision-making processes, and how data and analytics are used to inform strategy, providing valuable context and experience that supports both professional growth and career exploration
