The IT Infrastructure Operations team provides Mainframe, Data Center, Computing Infrastructure, Enterprise Network and Data Management for ITS and the campus community. The group consists of several teams and leaders.

The Data and Integration Services team provide database infrastructure, data movement, data modeling, data transformation, integration platforms, and associated processes to support the enterprise data needs for operational, analytical, and strategic utilization of enterprise and departmental data.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Senior Database Administrator serves as a technical leader responsible for the architecture, implementation, and operational management of enterprise database platforms supporting mission-critical applications across the UC San Diego campus community. This role provides advanced expertise in relational database technologies including MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL, ensuring the reliability, security, scalability, and performance of systems that support academic, research, and administrative operations.

Working within the Data and Integration Services team, the Senior DBA designs and implements enterprise database solutions across on-premises and cloud environments. The position evaluates business and technical requirements, data models, workload characteristics, and compliance considerations to deliver database architectures that support highly available and resilient systems. This includes selecting and implementing appropriate technologies for high availability, replication, backup and recovery, performance optimization, and disaster recovery.

The incumbent leads initiatives related to database platform engineering and lifecycle management, including system installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, migrations, and capacity planning. They establish and maintain database standards, governance practices, and operational procedures to ensure consistent and reliable service delivery across the enterprise database portfolio.

This role partners closely with application development teams, infrastructure engineers, and campus stakeholders to design database architectures that support both existing and emerging applications. The Senior DBA provides guidance on schema design, query optimization, indexing strategies, and database performance tuning while helping teams adopt best practices for data management and platform reliability.

In addition to technical leadership responsibilities, the position contributes to operational excellence by developing automation, monitoring, and observability capabilities that improve service reliability and efficiency. The Senior DBA also participates in a rotating on-call schedule supporting 24x7 database operations and plays a key role in incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement efforts for enterprise data platforms.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Design, implement, and maintain enterprise database platforms including MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL across on-premises and cloud environments supporting mission-critical applications.

* Lead database platform engineering activities including installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, backup management, observability, and user access provisioning.

* Provide production support for enterprise database systems, including monitoring, troubleshooting, incident response, and ensuring systems meet service level agreements.

* Optimize database performance and reliability through query tuning, indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, and resource utilization improvements.

* Develop and implement database automation, monitoring, and operational procedures to improve service reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency.

* Implement database security, backup, and disaster recovery solutions to ensure compliance with institutional standards and protect enterprise data assets.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Advanced experience administering relational database management systems including MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL in enterprise environments.

  • Experience managing databases in both cloud environments (such as AWS RDS) and standalone database infrastructure, including deployment, configuration, maintenance, and backup and recovery.

  • Strong expertise in database performance tuning and optimization, including query analysis, indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, and troubleshooting performance bottlenecks.

  • Advanced SQL development and tuning skills, including experience with DDL/DML and database programming languages such as PL/SQL or T-SQL.

  • Experience supporting database platforms across Linux and Windows environments, including implementing high availability, replication, and disaster recovery strategies.

  • Experience using scripting or automation tools such as PowerShell or Python to automate database operations and data management tasks.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $108,100 - $204,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $51.77 - $98.13

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
