Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The purpose of Chilled Water Systems ( CWS) is to produce and distribute chilled water for approximately 155 buildings located at the main campus and two (2) satellite campuses in a cost effective, efficient and reliable manner. Chilled water is produced in two ways. One is by an extensive chilled water generating system - the single, virtual chilled water plant, comprised of four (4) networked chiller plants that are operated as a single virtual system and the second is by stand-alone chillers that are building specific. Additionally, Chilled Water Systems provides electric and steam load balance for Cogeneration Systems. CWS is part of UNC Energy Services.
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $5,838 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE: $2,919 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE AND $2,919 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.

This position is responsible for assigned areas of distributed control system and instrumentation installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair. This position must commission and operate existing and new plants. The control systems and associated instruments operate 5 large-scale chilled water plants, a sophisticated Thermal Energy Storage System and upgrading of existing controls and power electronics. The plants must operate continuously and are unattended 31% of the time. With the growing size and complexity of the chilled water system, it requires extension automation at the central plants. The chiller plant operation has evolved from stand-along plant operation at each respective site to a multiple virtual plant operation. Chilled water machinery is fully automated to enable unattended operation. This position involves distributed control systems, instrumentation, and power electronics, installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair. These are full-time duties with continued plant expansions and the need to constantly update and maintain existing hardware and software.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Associate's degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Licenses/Certifications
* Valid NC Driver's License.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Position Requires:
* Ascend/Descend ladders and/or stairs to heights of 120 feet (cooling towers).
* Work hands-free on Instrumentation equipment at high elevations (example cooling towers), with approved safety equipment ( PPE).
* Enter Confined Spaces.
* Contact with or exposed to Hazardous Materials/Substances.
* Lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
* Manipulate large pieces of equipment weighing up to 1000lbs. with PPE such as suitable rigging equipment.
* Work in very noisy environments - hearing protection PPE provided.
* Work on energized equipment less than 1000 volts (medium voltage and large horsepower machinery) - PPE provided.
* Valid NC Driver's License to operate CWS vehicles as required for position.
* Follows all local, state and federal safety guidelines (proper PPE will be provided).

Position uses equipment such as:
laptop computers, digital multimeters, precision electronic and pneumatic loop calibrators, and precision decade bridges to check instrument configuration and test control loop quality including control valves and other final control device functions. Use precision watt calibrators, power analyzers, and digital storage oscilloscopes to check for power quality, power element, and transmitter accuracy. Use computer to develop and maintain an instrument database.

Performs lockout/tag out per OSHA guidelines. Calibrated & tested controls to prevent catastrophic equipment failure, personal injury, or loss of life.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS
The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
