This position is part of the Protection and Control Engineering group located in the North Carolinas Regional Headquarters in downtown Raleigh, NC. This work group is responsible for the design of protection and control relaying applications for substations (new and existing). Design projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities.

The person in this position will work in support of project teams responsible for the design of protection and control relaying applications for substations (new and existing) with a specific focus on Short-Circuit Modeling and Protection Settings. Design projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities. This work requires an understanding of power systems, transformers, protective relaying, and electrical engineering principles for high voltage substations at voltages of 115kV, 230kV and 500kV. Additionally, this position will support system model updates and studies driven by Transmission Planning system updates and modifications, Economic Development driven projects, and Wholesale Customer driven projects. Must be able to manage multiple tasks in various stages of design or study to meet project schedule deadlines and customer requested deliverables.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs.

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering degree preferred - the concepts of protection schemes require an understanding of symmetrical components

  • Experience with power system modeling and relay coordination studies using Aspen One-Liner or CAPE software

  • Analysis and reporting of fault analysis and relay actions

  • Familiarity with protection system components, such as relays, carrier sets, RTU, instrument transformers, and DC systems.

  • Experience with relay settings calculations for protective relays from Protection & Control designs specifically settings for line, autobank transformers, transformers, bus, capacitor bank for both transmission & distribution class equipment

  • Interpretation of relay documents and Protection & Control design drawings

  • Interpretation and compliance with all applicable NERC (PRC-006, PRC-012, PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-027, CIP-002, and CIP-10) and FERC regulations

  • Familiarity with Aspen Relay Database, SEL-5010, SEL-5030 AcSELerator software.

  • Adhere to internal and industry compliance and regulations

  • Familiarity with MicroStation or AutoCAD

  • Professional Engineer Certifications/License

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
