Position Summary
Employees working at this level of Stream and Power Plant II, perform maintenance and repairs throughout the campus. Employees perform skilled mechanical work in repairs, operations, maintenance of heating/cooling plant, refrigeration, and/or other related mechanical equipment throughout the campus. They work under the general supervision from the Superintendent of Building Maintenance.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Fire Boilers. Monitors boiler water and fuel levels makes adjustments to maintain required levels. Controls and maintains plant equipment (e.g., boilers, pumps, air handling equipment, generators, etc.) using control system, semi-automatic control equipment, and building automation controls.
  • Operates and maintains power plant equipment, building ventilation and air-conditioning equipment, refrigeration equipment, various lab equipment, pumps, compressors, building lighting, building plumbing, domestic water systems, irrigation system, and other building mechanical equipment.
  • Operates and tends plant equipment, boiler rooms, water softeners, steam humidifier systems, DI water equipment for labs, vacuum system for labs, condensers, electrical switch gears, building electrical system & panels, emergency electrical panels, building lighting panels, variable speed drivers, racking and resetting of circuit breakers, and associated equipment.
  • Dusts, cleans, lubricates, repairs, maintain, monitors, and/or inspects equipment, switches, valves gauges, alarms, safety devices, replaces filters (water & air), investigates malfunctions, and/or operations problems. Performs maintenance and repairs work on a wide variety of power plant equipment and machinery. Observes and interprets reading on gauges, meters and charts to ensure that machines and equipment are operating properly and efficiently. Maintains daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activates; takes regulatory action based on reading from charts, meters, and gauges. Starts, stops, and /or adjusts controls valves on pumping equipment, heating system, air compressors, or other power plant equipment as necessary.
  • Check pump gauges for accuracy, check pressures and adjust system as needed. Inspects records or log book entries and communicates with plant personnel to access equipment operating status.
  • Analyzes problems to take appropriate action to ensure the continuous and reliable operations of the equipment and the system. Performs duties of the lower levels in this series as required.
  • Performs other related duties and participate on special projects as assigned. Including, but not limited to, special events and room set-ups as needed, trash pickup, moving furniture and equipment, snow plowing, salt spreading, lawn and garden work as needed, general carpentry, etc.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    1. High school diploma or equivalent.
    2. Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in the maintenance and operation of steam and power plant equipment.
    3. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in a position comparable to the Steam and Power Plant II.
    4. Possession of current/valid licenses and certificates, as required by the employing institution.


    Preferred Qualifications

    Valid Illinois Driver's License preferred

    Refrigerant Certification preferred

    HVAC experience preferred.

    Experience with electrical systems preferred.

    Trouble shooting skills in HVAC and Electrical system preferred.

    Refrigeration experience preferred
