Tools & Gauge Quality Technician

The Tool & Gauge Quality Technician plays a critical role in supporting the quality function within Momentive Technologies. The role is responsible for the calibration, maintenance, repair, and lifecycle management of approximately 1,400 precision measurement devices, including micrometers, calipers, CMMs, microscopes, pyrometers, analytical balances, and industrial scales. This role ensures that all measurement equipment used in production, quality control, and R&D meets required accuracy, reliability, and compliance standards.

Working closely with Quality Engineers, Manufacturing, and R&D teams, the technician manages the full lifecycle of measurement devices - including calibration, verification, troubleshooting, repair coordination, and documentation. They maintain the integrity of the metrology system by scheduling and performing routine calibrations, conducting capability studies (such as G&R), and ensuring proper storage, handling, and traceability of gauges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Calibration & Maintenance:
    • Perform routine and advanced calibration of dimensional, mechanical, electrical, and analytical measurement tools.
    • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment.
    • Document calibration results, adjustments, and out-of-tolerance conditions in accordance with internal procedures and external standards.
  • Equipment Management
    • Manage the full lifecycle of gauges and instruments, including inventory control, scheduling, labeling, and traceability.
    • Maintain calibration records to support ISO 9001, AS9100, or other regulatory requirements.
    • Coordinate with external calibration labs when outsourcing is required.
    • Evaluate new measurement equipment.
  • Quality & Compliance
    • Ensure all measurement devices meet required accuracy and traceability to NIST or equivalent standards.
    • Support internal and external audits by providing documentation and technical explanations.
    • Investigate measurement discrepancies and assist with root-cause analysis.
  • Technical Support
    • Provide technical support for measurement issues on the production floor.
    • Assist engineering and quality teams with measurement method development and capability studies.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of dimensional metrology principles and calibration techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing), and technical specifications.
  • Strong familiarity with ISO9001:2015 and AS9100:D quality system requirements.
  • Minimum two-year technical or engineering degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in metrology, calibration, tool and gauge management, or precision measurement.
  • ASQ certifications such as CQT, CQI, or CCT.
  • Formal metrology training, including NCSLI or NAVSEA programs.
  • OEM training on precision measurement equipment (e.g., CMMs, XRF analyzers, pyrometers, pressure transducers, analytical balances).
  • Hands-on experience with CMMs, including operation and software.
  • Familiarity with analytical instruments, particularly XRF and pyrometers (highly desirable).
  • Proficiency with calibration management systems, including SAP or QT9.
  • Experience using Minitab for statistical analysis.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent documentation and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a large, diverse equipment inventory.
  • Strong communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • High degree of organization and personal accountability.
