The RN Transporter ensures patient safety by following standard processes, maintaining equipment and escalating issues when appropriate. Keeps patients, families and hospital staff informed of care needs. Provides safe, timely, and appropriate intra-hospital monitored transport for adult patients.

Job Responsibilities

  • Completes all pre/post transport procedures in order to ensure patient safety.
  • Ensures that a face-to-face ISHAPED handoff will be given before and after transport of each patient.
  • Reports any safety-related events according to hospital policy by using the established reporting system. Notifies nurses to ensure patients are able to be transported. Communicates and notifies dispatcher if any problems develop. Relays information to departments as needed.
  • Maintains potency of intravenous lines, high-risk medications, and critical care equipment during transport.
  • Monitors/manages all medical devices (i.e. IV's, catheters and/or portable oxygen) and notifies the bedside Registered Nurse and Physician immediately should devices not function properly. Maintains equipment such as monitors, ventilators, and drug infusions in addition to demonstrating knowledge of airway management and the location of all crash carts.
  • Uses appropriate transport tracking systems to acknowledge new assignments, place jobs in progress, track the progress of jobs and complete assignments. Documents each patient transport appropriately and communicates with clinical staff concerning the readiness and/or special needs of patients. Maintains a record of patient data such as vital signs, procedures, medications and patient responses.
  • Verifies patient identification per hospital policy, including asking patients to state their name and date of birth while comparing information on their armbands if possible.
  • Follows transport procedures and assists in moving patients when requested by utilizing safe transport, moving procedures and body mechanics.
  • Ensures safety, privacy and comfort for each patient, for example covering them with a blanket for privacy and warmth.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Certifications: Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Upon Start

Licensure: Licensed or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse or an active multi-state Registered Nurse license

Experience: 2 years critical care experience with recent acute care setting experience

Education: Bachelor's Degree Nursing or Associate's Degree. If RN has an Associate's Degree, within 2 years of date of hire, they must meet with their nurse leader and conduct the following: 1.) Identify which accredited school they plan to attend 2.) Provide a written plan with anticipated BSN completion date 3.) Submit a review of transcripts from the school indicating the required pre-requisites and timeline for taking the courses 4.) Complete BSN within 5 years of start date.
