Aquatic Research Technician

The Larkin Lab at The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, is seeking an enthusiastic and capable research technician to assist with ongoing research in aquatic plant ecology and conservation. This position will support research investigating revegetation of native plants in lakes after treatment of invasive species.

Job Duties

50% Perform laboratory and benchwork tasks related to plant ecology experiments under supervision of a PhD student and / or research staff:

• Assist with tasks related to seed collection, processing, and propagation of aquatic plants.
• Collect, record, and manage field and laboratory data accurately.
• Troubleshoot field and lab challenges with a flexible and solutions-oriented approach.

50% Conduct fieldwork in lakes under supervision of a PhD student and / or research staff:

• Operate and work from boats and canoes; snorkeling or SCUBA and motorboat operation experience is a plus
• Transport and carry equipment, often over uneven terrain or in water.

Expected start date of May 2026 with an anticipated end date of late August/September. Hours are subject to change, but candidate should expect anywhere from 20-40 hours per week. We will be reviewing applications as they come in, so apply early!

Required

• Strong interest in aquatic plant ecology and conservation.
• Experience handling and identifying aquatic plants.
• Comfortable working in and around water in a variety of conditions.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in field and lab settings.
• Some experience with field data collection and/or lab work.
• Physical capability to carry heavy equipment and work in variable weather conditions.
• Problem-solving skills and adaptability in dynamic field conditions.

Preferred

• A Bachelor's degree (or in progress) in Ecology, Fisheries and Wildlife, Botany, Environmental Science or related field
• Snorkeling experience
• SCUBA certification
• Strong swimming skills
• Non-motorized watercraft (canoe / kayak) experience
• Motorboat operation experience / license
• First aid certification

Pay Range: $15.25 - $23 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
