SOAR-REEU Interns / applicants will have already applied directly through the department. Applying via this posting is the final step in the hiring process for selected candidates.

Job Duties

  • Actively participate in a designated summer research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor and the host lab team.
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: conducting literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data, performing lab and field work, maintaining detailed documentation, collaborating with team members, preparing presentations and reports, and assisting with administrative tasks.
  • Engage in additional research activities within the host lab, such as attending lab meetings and supporting other ongoing projects.
  • Participate fully in all required REEU program professional development sessions and weekly group activities.
  • Complete all assigned program deliverables, including required forms, newsletter reflections, research abstracts, and a final poster presentation.
  • Maintain consistent, professional communication with mentors, lab colleagues, and program coordinators throughout the internship.

  • Undergraduate student majoring in STEM, agricultural science, or similar field
  • Clear interest in agriculture, food systems, or environmental science
  • Clear evidence of applicant's motivation, persistence, ability to overcome obstacles
  • Evidence of enthusiasm or commitment to research, potential for future research
  • Capacity for program to positively impact applicant
  • Clear potential for leadership and potential to contribute positively to our program community
About the Department

The Department of Horticultural Science at the University of Minnesota, part of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, is dedicated to advancing plant science through research, education, and outreach. The department focuses on areas such as plant breeding, sustainable horticulture, and consumer-focused marketing, supported by state-of-the-art greenhouses and research facilities. Students benefit from hands-on learning, professional development opportunities, and active collaboration with industry and community partners.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $5,000 stipend + room and board in Pioneer Hall over program dates of June 1, 2026 - August 7, 2026
