PURPOSE: To provide support across Duke Health as a member of the Strategic Planning team in the compilation and analysis of strategic intelligence, health system activity, and healthcare forecasts for use in the development of strategic plans, external landscape assessments, programmatic opportunity assessments, and ad hoc requests.

Job Responsibilities:

This position carries responsibilities for providing support to ensure that Duke Health Strategic Planning makes appropriate recommendations for strategic and business decisions. Responsibilities include analyzing and synthesizing data from a variety of sources and communicating information through coherent written and visual presentations. Analysts develop excellent quantitative and qualitative skills while building a rich base of knowledge within the healthcare industry. Analysts will be required to understand the origin, usage, and parameters of data sets in order to appropriately develop actionable insights. Analysts gain exposure to the decision-making process and have the opportunity to contribute to the work of the department to inform the strategic direction of one of the nation's top healthcare systems. As such, this position carries high expectations for articulating the "story" behind the data.

Strategic Intelligence Management



  • Pull health system profile data sets in a consistent manner, produce standard visualizations for each organization and upload materials into Sharepoint templates ready for analyses.
  • Create health system profile analyses by integrating multiple publicly available data sources into one cohesive assessment.
  • Maintain and update select NC health system comparison tables.
  • Ensure all standard analytic health system files regularly referenced by the department are kept current.
  • Maintain department standard slide deck, ensuring slides used frequently across the team are refreshed annually, formatted to team standards and stored in a central repository for easy access.
  • Maintain the strategic intelligence database of weekly news articles ensuring appropriate cataloging for easy retrieval.
  • Monitor local, regional, and national trends, to include reviewing various news articles weekly, documenting for the team, and periodically summarizing key articles to share with leadership across the organization.
  • Support the synthesis of strategic intelligence themes for Leadership and Board every 2-3 months.



Data Analysis



  • Support the analysis and collection of data to respond to information needs for Duke Health's strategic and business planning functions, understanding which data sources and components to utilize based on the given area of focus
  • Support department requests from Duke Health entities and staff to analyze, interpret and present data and information related to internal and external trends.
  • Assist planning team members in their analyses by producing maps using ArcGIS to aid in the visual representation of internal and market information.



Strategic Plan Development



  • Act as a support resource to department leadership in accessing relevant data sources necessary to develop strategic plans and business cases.
  • Identify necessary data to be collected. Effectively analyze the information to garner key insights.
  • Support strategic initiatives with basic data analyses, provider and landscape research and insights and industry projections.
  • Develop polished written and visual materials using supporting analytics to advance Duke Health strategic goals.



Ad-Hoc Reporting



  • Identify necessary data to be collected and run reports for specific requests.
  • Assist in developing ad-hoc reports aimed at extracting relevant data needed by the end user.
  • Effectively analyze and interpret the data/information to garner key insights and present the information in a clear, concise, and polished manner.
  • Maintain organized and clear plans/provide project management to complete assigned work. Consistently meet deliverable deadlines.



Additional Duties



  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Collaborate and communicate with other members of the department to ensure effective and efficient completion of projects and for problem-solving and on-the-job training.
  • Assist the planning team in managing the repository of historical requests, data pulls, and deliverables.



Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in a business, healthcare, or quantitative field required. Masters degree preferred.

Experience

Work requires three years of related experience. A Master's degree can substitute for two years of experience. Previous work experience in consulting, financial analysis, strategic planning, healthcare administration, or public policy is desired.

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required. Working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, including experience drafting written materials and visuals for planning team members and leadership. Microsoft Access, Tableau, and ArcGIS experience preferred.
