IT Telecommunication Technician

Summary

Responsible for installing and maintaining telecommunications devices and network equipment within the City of Garland telecommunications system, working to ensure the cable-device system is operating at an optimum level to successfully support all users.

Pay Range: $23.62 - 30.14 (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Install and move network equipment by running cable and connecting devices.

• Troubleshoot and repair telephone, key system, paging system, and network equipment.

• Determine if equipment needs to be repaired or replaced and install new phone equipment as required, test the phones, and label.

• Communicate with City employees requesting assistance for phone/network problems.

• Monitor problem resolution and ensure satisfactory and timely completion.

• Organize vehicles and storage area so needed supplies and equipment can be ordered.

• Conduct preventive maintenance on phone system by cleaning phone rooms and checking wiring connections.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or G.E.D with advanced training courses at a telephony trade school

• One to Three years related experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

• Associate's Degree in Electronics or related field of study.

• Experience in telephone switching, carrier equipment, software installation procedures and communications equipment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of telecommunications theory and practice

• Ability to work with specific hardware such as cabling and transmission test equipment

• Interpersonal skills to work with customers to resolve issues

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid Class 'C' Driver's License
