Job Description

The Outpatient Pharmacy Clerk plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of the outpatient pharmacy by assisting with prescription processing, customer service, and administrative functions under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This position ensures that patients receive timely, accurate, and compassionate service while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulations and institutional policies.

Job Description

The Outpatient Pharmacy Clerk plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of the outpatient pharmacy by assisting with prescription processing, customer service, and administrative functions under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This position ensures that patients receive timely, accurate, and compassionate service while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulations and institutional policies. The Pharmacy Clerk will be the first point of contact for patients-welcoming them to the pharmacy, assisting with prescription pickups, and ensuring a smooth and positive experience. This role will be working in a fast-paced environment, must demonstrate strong attention to detail, and be motivated by helping others.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist patients at the pharmacy counter and by phone.
  • Receive, verify, and route new and refill prescriptions for processing.
  • Accurately enter patient, prescriber, and insurance information into the pharmacy system.
  • Process/type prescriptions.
  • Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system to process payments, insurance claims, and refunds while maintaining HIPAA confidentiality.
  • Assist pharmacists and technicians in maintaining efficient workflow and ensuring timely service.
  • Restock inventory, check expiration dates, and maintain organized and clean/dust pharmacy shelves and storage areas.
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, recordkeeping, and managing prescription logs.
  • Support compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations for controlled substances and patient confidentiality.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives as directed by pharmacy leadership.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • College coursework in healthcare, life sciences, or pharmacy preferred.
  • Prior retail or outpatient pharmacy experience preferred.
  • 1 - 2 years of customer service or cashier experience required.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Basic understanding of pharmacy operations, medications, and medical terminology.
  • Clerical and mathematical accuracy for cash handling and prescription processing.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must comply with institutional and state requirements for non-licensed pharmacy support personnel.
  • Requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Salary Range:

$24.22 - $36.32 USD Hour
