University Information

UNC Greensboro, located in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, is 1 of only 57 doctoral institutions recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for both higher research activity and community engagement. Founded in 1891 and one of the original three UNC System institutions, UNC Greensboro is one of the most diverse universities in the state with 20,000+ students, and 3,000+ faculty and staff members representing 90+ nationalities. With 17 Division I athletic teams, 85 undergraduate degrees in over 125 areas of study, as well as 74 master's and 32 doctoral programs, UNC Greensboro is consistently recognized nationally among the top universities for academic excellence and value, with noted strengths in health and wellness, visual and performing arts, nursing, education, and more. Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest academic unit of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The Office of the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences provides overall leadership and coordination for UNCG's largest academic unit, comprising 26 departments, programs, and centers. The College supports faculty research, scholarship, and creative work in a wide range of disciplines, and offers doctoral, Master's, and undergraduate degrees in addition to providing the great majority of general education courses for all UNCG undergraduates. The College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of over 450 faculty and 60 staff members. The College contributes to the university's mission by producing more than 50% of student credit hours each semester, providing the majority of general education courses, having the highest proportion of undergraduate majors and graduate students, and encouraging research, service, and teaching excellence among its faculty. Dean's Office staff members must provide administrative guidance to all of the unit's departments, programs, and centers. Due to the large number of faculty and staff under its purview, the College Dean's Office deals with considerably more volume and complexity in its administrative tasks than the Dean's staff in the professional schools. The College also maintains strong working relationships with the professional schools and is in constant communication with administrative units on campus, especially the Division of Academic Affairs.
