Department of Justice Reporter (Level 1 Journalist)

Thomson Reuters
United States, D.C., Washington
1333 H Street Northwest (Show on map)
Feb 24, 2026

Reuters is seeking a dynamic, scoopy reporter to cover the Department of Justice, Attorney General Pam Bondi and federal law enforcement from our Washington, D.C. bureau. The DOJ stands at the center of the nation's most critical legal and political battles, making it an essential source of news and insight about the workings of the nation's capital, with broad impacts for the United States and its democracy. Reuters aims to illuminate the changes the administration has made within the Justice Department and how the administration is using the DOJ to shape the course of major U.S. institutions, including state and local governments, universities and companies, as well as the lives of average Americans.

Covering the DOJ requires sharp news sense, a hunger to break news and sophisticated chops as a builder and maintainer of sources. This person will work in tandem with our current DOJ reporter and FBI reporter to chronicle the machinations of the nation's legal machinery through major criminal and civil litigation, with a particular eye toward elevating the most urgent story lines with aggressive reporting and effective storytelling. Covering the DOJ's involvement in elections and voting will be a top priority but far from the only one, so shrewd judgement identifying and executing high-value story targets is a must.

About the Role

As a Department of Justice Reporter (Level 1 Journalist), you will:

  • Break news within the DOJ, including with Main Justice and districts nationwide.
  • Chronicle Bondi's tenure as attorney general, with a particular eye toward ways in which she differs from her predecessors.
  • Generate story ideas for enterprise reporting, scoops and exclusives that help drive the news cycle.
  • Collaborate closely and work to confirm tips with other members of the legal, politics and national security teams, as well as Reuters colleagues worldwide.
  • Cover the DOJ's key news moments, including indictments, investigations, congressional hearings and the occasional trial, while still developing ambitious reporting lines that distinguish Reuters from its competitors.

About You

You're a fit for the role of Department of Justice Reporter (Level 1 Journalist) if you have:

  • At least 5 years' experience as a reporter, preferably covering legal affairs, politics or government agencies.
  • An enthusiasm for developing sources in a highly competitive environment. Bringing existing sources would be a valued bonus but is not essential.
  • A hunger for scoops and covering the nation's most important issues in a distinctive way.
  • A proven track record in breaking source-based news and producing deeply reported enterprise stories that explain complex issues in clear, legible language.
