Summary

Responsible for collecting topographic data and providing Field Supervisors with accurate grade information to facilitate drainage of new pavement improvements for alley and street projects. Also, this position is responsible for establishing control points for alignment of streets and elevation information for pavement improvement projects.

Pay Range: (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Set elevation control points and place markers providing grade information.

  • Locate City benchmarks, set control and use a surveyor's auto level and elevation rod to process level loop data.

  • Mark sidewalks and driveways to prepare for construction.

  • Communicate effectively with excavation and paving crews in the interest of job quality.

  • Monitor jobs in progress.

  • Locate property markers using an electronic magnetic locator.

  • Establish elevations of existing streets or alleys using a surveyor's level and elevation rod or Data collector.

  • Attend all required training and safety meetings.

  • Set pins and maintain string line for construction crew.

  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays to support special events, respond to natural disasters, critical incidents, and other emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

  • 2 years related experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience

  • 2-4 years land surveying, including boundary and construction staking

  • Related experience with an Electronic Total Station as well as using a Data Collector

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of City of Garland Standard Construction Details

  • Knowledge of city code ordinances and Federal and State regulations

  • Knowledge of Survey and Construction practices

  • Skill in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)

  • Ability to calculate grades elevations and slopes

  • Ability to keep legible, clear notes

  • Ability to read and interpret City maps and documentation

  • Ability to review contractor specifications

  • Ability to monitor and review information from materials, events or the environment, to detect and/or assess problems

  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision

  • Ability to work in a team environment

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license

  • May be required to obtain a Valid Class A Texas Driver's License with tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire

The incumbent works in an outdoor environment; frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more and traverse uneven ground several times daily.
