Job Summary

The Outside Plant Installer is responsible for installing, placing, routing, and maintaining fiber optic cable in outside plant environments, including aerial and underground infrastructure. This role supports critical telecommunications and data center connectivity projects by performing fiber installation, splicing, testing, and documentation in accordance with construction prints and safety standards. The position requires hands-on field work, adherence to safety protocols, and collaboration with project teams to ensure high-quality and timely project completion. This is a field-based role with opportunities for skill development and career growth within the telecom and low voltage industry.

Job Responsibilities




  • Install, place, and route fiber optic cable in aerial and underground outside plant environments.



  • Perform fiber pulls through conduit, handholes, manholes, and utility pathways using manual methods or mechanical equipment.



  • Install aerial fiber using bucket trucks, strand, and lashing equipment.



  • Prepare, splice, and terminate fiber using fusion or mechanical methods in closures, cabinets, and pedestals.



  • Conduct OTDR and power meter/light source testing to verify fiber performance and integrity.



  • Maintain proper bend radius and pulling tension to protect fiber integrity.



  • Read and interpret construction prints, splice plans, route maps, and work orders.



  • Locate and identify existing utilities prior to digging or pulling fiber using appropriate locating tools and safe digging practices.



  • Open and inspect handholes and manholes to assess pathway readiness.



  • Rod, clear, and prepare conduit pathways for cable placement.



  • Set up and maintain traffic control measures, including cones, signage, and flagging operations.



  • Review permits for road work, bucket truck operation, and confined space entry as required.



  • Conduct daily safety meetings and comply with all safety standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment.



  • Load and organize tools, equipment, and materials for daily field operations.



  • Complete documentation, labeling, and as-built updates for all completed fiber work.



  • Communicate project progress, material needs, and field issues to supervisors or project managers in a professional manner.




Job Requirements




  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.



  • 0-2 years of experience in outside plant installation, data center environments, or related field work.



  • Experience in construction or skilled trades such as general construction labor, electrical apprenticeship, low voltage installation, cable installation (CAT5/6 or coax), HVAC, plumbing, mechanical trades, landscaping, or other outdoor labor roles.



  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.



  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction documents.



  • Proficiency with basic hand tools including multi-bit screwdriver, tape measure, snips, needle nose pliers, channel locks, punch down tool, flashlight, and tool pouch.



  • Ability to work on ladders, bucket trucks, and scissor lifts.



  • Ability to work in confined spaces and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds as needed.



  • Ability to stand and remain on feet for extended periods during shifts.



  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and a professional, team-oriented approach.




Education




  • High School Diploma or GED required.




Work Experience




  • Entry-level candidates with 0-2 years of relevant field, construction, or low voltage experience are encouraged to apply.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Day Shift: 6:30 AM - 6:00 PM (Monday-Thursday), 6:30 AM - 2:00 PM (Friday).



  • Night Shift: 6:30 PM - 6:00 AM (Monday-Thursday), 6:30 PM - 2:00 AM (Friday).



  • This role requires consistent field attendance and flexibility to work assigned shifts, including extended hours as project needs dictate.
