Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Job Summary
The Animal Technician supports biomedical research by providing daily care and husbandry for laboratory animals in compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. This role ensures animal welfare, accurate recordkeeping, and proper sanitation of animal housing and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform daily animal care and husbandry (feeding, watering, cage/rack changes).
  • Monitor animal health and report concerns promptly.
  • Maintain clean, sanitized animal rooms and equipment per SOPs.
  • Operate cage washers and autoclaves.
  • Maintain accurate records (health surveillance, feed logs, environmental logs, animal receipt/disposition).
  • Support research activities as required.
  • Follow all safety, PPE, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience:
    • 1+ year of animal handling or lab animal sanitation equipment experience.
    • OR equivalent education/experience combination.
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • General knowledge of animal husbandry and laboratory animal regulations.
    • Ability to identify and report animal health issues.
    • Experience with sanitation, disinfection, cage washers, and autoclaves.
    • Basic computer skills (email, barcode scanning, electronic reporting, timesheets).
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to stand/walk up to 7 hours/day.
    • Lift/move up to 50 lbs.
    • Bend, squat, kneel, reach overhead.
    • Wear PPE including masks, gloves, protective clothing, and respirator if assigned.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician-equivalent training preferred.
Shift:
  • Day | 5x8 hrs (06:00-15:00 or 07:00-16:00, TBD)
Schedule:
  • Monday-Friday
